Page 51 of Tainted Deception

I got out of the car, digging the copy of her car keys I had made out of my pocket. She muttered under her breath when she caught sight of the keys after she climbed out. She still had her bag on her shoulder, and I stepped toward her, getting a hold of the strap and pulling it off.

“Hey,” she protested when I tossed the bag back into the back seat.

“How do you think we found you?” I questioned, cocking my head. “And why I worked with them? They snuck a tracker into your bag at the poker game.”

Shock widened her eyes as she looked between me and the bag. “Shit.”

“Didn’t think to check your stuff while you were warming that biker’s bed?”

Her surprise morphed into annoyance as she crossed her arms. “You have no idea what I did last night.”

“I know you got to his apartment and didn’t leave until this morning.”

She lunged forward, snagging the keys from my hand before spinning around and stalking to her car. I barreled after her, catching her around the waist and pushing her up against the side of the car.

“This is why business and pleasure shouldn’t mix,” she spat out as I caged her in with my arms, resting my palms on the hood of the car. “You fucked up last night, Gage. I told you it’s just sex. We aren’t together. You aren’t my boyfriend. And you already knew I slept with them.”

“I know I messed up,” I snapped, lowering my head until my face was inches from her. “But don’t dismiss what this is as just sex.”

“That’s what it is—”

“No,” I cut her off sharply. “That’s what you’re trying to make it. I’ve told you what I want. All of you. Yet you’re holding back.”

She bit her lip, her eyes clouding with indecision. “I can’t give you that.”

“Yet,” I clarified. “You can’t give me thatyet.”

“Gage—”

“I know you want me, Rynn,” I murmured quietly. “But you want them too, even if you try to deny it. They’re in your fucking head for some reason. It’s okay. I can be patient.”

Her lips parted, as if she hadn’t been expecting me to know the exact reason she wasn’t letting me all the way in. Of course I fucking knew. I might know they were going to show their true colors sooner or later, but she didn’t. That summer with them must have really been fucking amazing for her to not see them for what they were. She would, though. And when she did, I’d be here for her.

I grabbed the keys from her hand before stepping back. “Come on. I’m driving.”

She scowled but didn’t argue, stalking to the passenger side and getting in. After I got into the driver’s side, I checked my phone and started the engine. There was a text from one of Ellie’s men about the meetup point. We’d drive an hour and a half before we switched cars. I’d already checked her car for devices, but we weren’t taking any chances since we were going home. Rynn leaned forward, turning on the radio as I drove.

It was maybe only five minutes later when I noticed a black sedan behind us. Which wouldn’t seem out of the ordinary if it wasn’t for the license plate on the front. My heart stuttered when I saw the New York plate. It could be random, but when I purposefully ran a yellow light, the car sped up, running the red to stay on my ass. The driver wasn’t even hiding the fact that they were following me.

My hands tightened around the steering wheel as I cut a glance at Rynn, who was just staring out the window. Nerves swarmed me as I debated what to do. If this person was from the East Coast, there was no denying they were here for me. The past I’d been hiding from had finally fucking found me. I kept driving, keeping an eye on the car.

* * *

“There they are.”I pointed out the white SUV after pulling into the parking lot. “Go. I have to do something, so I’ll be there later.”

She turned toward me, a frown on her lips. “You’re not coming with me?”

“I’ll catch up.” The car was still following, and there was no way I was leading them to Ellie’s. Plus, I needed to figure out who the fuck it was. It would be safer if Rynn was nowhere near me when I did that.

“Does this have anything to do with the car that’s been following us?”

I jerked my head up to look at her, and her eyes cut to me for a moment.

“It’s been behind us for the last hour,” she said airily.

I raised an eyebrow, my lips twitching up in amusement as I studied her while she stared out the window. She was mad at herself for not catching the tracking device in her bag and was trying to prove to me that she was aware. And she was. I wasn’t denying that. She was smart and strong. Except when it came to Jace and Kian. She seemed to forget where their loyalties were, and they weren’t with her. Even if she wouldn’t admit it, she had a soft spot for them, and I wasn’t sure what it was going to take for her to realize the truth.

My heart dipped when the nagging thought wouldn’t leave. What if I was wrong? They lied for her. Kept her away from Chris and Hayes. It was clear they were both fucking obsessed with her. How far would they go to have her? And would she choose one of them over me? My eyes went back to the rearview mirror, staring at the black sedan. If my past was about to bite me in the ass, I might not be here to fight for her.
