Page 63 of Tainted Deception

“Ellie won’t let him go. You know that. You pleading to her won’t do anything other than cause tension between the two of you.”

“I’m not going to talk to Ellie.”

“Rynn,” I growled, chasing after her as she swung open the door. “You can’t break him out. Everyone will think you betrayed the organization.”

Without a word, she stepped into the hall, and I lunged forward, wrapping my arms around her. She shrieked in protest, wriggling as I trapped her arms against her sides.

“You’re not thinking clearly,” I told her gruffly. “Take some time to calm down.”

“Get the hell off me,” she demanded. “I’m doing this.”

“Sorry, Rynn. I can’t let you. It’s a mistake.”

I walked forward, barely keeping her in my hold as I used one hand to open my dorm door, glad I’d left it unlocked. She was cussing me out, and I hissed out a breath when her boot slammed down on my toes.

“I won’t forgive you,” she screamed as I pushed her into my room. “If you stop me from doing this, whatever we have—it’ll be fucking done.”

My stomach twisted painfully as I moved to shut the door once I was back in the hall. “I’ll handle it.”

“Handle it? By letting him die—”

Her screams were muffled when I slammed the door shut, fishing out my key and locking it before she could open it. Thudding came from the other side as she pounded on the wood, but there was no way she was breaking the door. We’d had both of our doors reinforced to keep people from busting in. The lock needed a key, even from the inside, and it was an intricate lock, making it impossible for her to pick it. There was no ledge outside my window for her to escape, and she’d left her phone in her dorm. She was locked in there until I came back.

I rushed down the hall, my mind racing as I tried to figure out my next move. Ellie wasn’t going to listen to excuses. Jace would be dead the second her plan was in place, and I needed to decide what to do. Stay quiet and let Ellie go through with it or somehow save the asshole who wouldn’t hesitate to kill me if he had a chance. Good thing I had an hour-long drive to think about it.

“Who is she with?”

I stayed silent, just like I had since this started. My body was screaming in agony, and I couldn’t hold back the hiss of pain when the guy slammed his fist into my ribs in the same spot he’d been focusing on for the last five hits. I was sitting on a metal chair with my hands cuffed behind me and my ankles tied to the legs of the chair. I wasn’t sure how long they’d been beating the fuck out of me, but it felt like hours.

My head was still throbbing from being knocked out when I’d stepped out of the club to find Pratt. And I’d woken up in this chair in an empty room with no windows and a single dim light hanging above me. For a while, there had been no one in the room, but then these two assholes showed up and started asking me about Rynn. When I refused to answer, it didn’t take long for them to spill blood to try and get me to talk. And I didn’t even know who the fuck had me.

“You want this to end?” The guy crouched down, getting eye level with me. His black hair was cut short, and his brown eyes were hard and cold as I met his gaze. “Tell us what you know about her.”

I glared at him, pressing my lips together. I hadn’t said a word and didn’t plan to start now. I wasn’t sure what the hell was going on, but the fact that I’d found out who Rynn was with moments before this happened was not a fucking coincidence.

“Let’s try this a different way,” the guy murmured, straightening up and crossing his arms. “How about you tell me—or I just kill you?”

My heart thudded as I wondered if he was bluffing. Would I give up my life to protect the girl who’d fucked me over twice now? Apparently, I would, because there wasn’t anything in me that wanted to spill her secret. I stayed silent, and the guy shook his head, his eyes flashing with impatience. He nodded at the man who was standing behind me, reaching his arm out, and my gut knotted when I saw the blade in his hand.

“Last chance,” he said as he returned his attention to me.

“Get fucked,” I gritted out, my voice full of loathing.

He drew the blade up, pressing it to my throat as I kept my eyes locked on his. A trace of fear had my heart skipping a beat, but I didn’t move a muscle. Would death really be so bad? It wasn’t like I was going anywhere other than back to hell in this life. The Disciples were all I’d ever known, and once this year was over, I’d be back in Pacific Point with Chris. I’d rather just end it now than go back to that.

“Do it,” I snarled, watching shock widen the guy’s eyes. “I’m not saying a word to you, so just fucking finish it.”

“That’s enough.”

The voice came from the side, and once the blade left my throat, I turned my head to see the once closed door was now wide open. And leaning against the wall right next to the doorway was Gage. His head was down as he lit the cigarette that was between his lips. My mind was racing. What the hell was going on? He raised his gaze to meet mine, pushing off the wall and striding closer.

He blew out a lungful of smoke. “Untie him and then leave.”

The two men rushed to follow his orders, and no one spoke as my ankles were freed, and then my wrists. My shoulders ached from being immobile for so long, and I sagged in the chair, breathing shallowly as my ribs protested from any kind of movement. Gage was still staring at me, and his eyes held no emotion, making me even more wary. The men left the room, closing the door behind them, leaving Gage and me alone.

“You have a death wish?” he asked after taking another drag of the cigarette. “Because it sounds like it with you begging them to kill you.”
