“So where does that leave us?” His eyes locked on mine.

“I don’t know. Friends, maybe?” The statement came out like a question.

“I can’t be your friend, Rynn.”

His words cut through me in a way I wasn’t expecting. Of course we couldn’t be friends. He might not want me dead, but Chris would have no issue doing it, and that was where Jace’s loyalty was. I straightened up, acting like I wasn’t bothered.

“Right,” I said tightly. “Being friends wouldn’t work.”

He cursed before he suddenly reached for me, taking me by surprise. His hand went behind my neck, and he pulled me close. Instead of the bruising kiss he’d given me that day at Chris’s house, this one was softer. Gentle. He took his time, kissing me as if he’d be content doing it for the rest of his life. I kissed him back, careful not to hurt him any more than he already was. After a while, he pulled away. His eyes searched mine as he brushed a lock of hair behind my ear.

“Ican’tbe your friend,” he said again, “because every time I’m with you, I want to do that. I want to kiss you. Touch you. I want it all with you.”

I stared at him, at a loss for words. I wanted that too. But I wanted it with more than just him. Just like with Gage, I couldn’t commit. Not that it would be possible between Jace and me anyway. Chris would never let Jace go.

Before either of us could say a word, there was a knock, and Kian’s muffled voice came through the door. “Rynn, open up.”

“Shit,” I muttered, jumping to my feet, then stopping to look at Jace.

“Tripp saw you and Jace coming into the building,” Kian said loudly, still banging on the door. “I know you’re in there. Open the door.”

“He’s not going to stop,” Jace grumbled, rolling his eyes. “Just let him in.”

“How are we going to explain what happened to you?”

“It’s fine,” Jace assured me as he stayed on the couch.

With a sigh, I dragged my feet as I went to my door. I was fucking exhausted, and Kian busting in here was only going to make things worse. He was going to question what happened to Jace, and I was sure he was still upset that I’d run off on him after he kissed me. It was already morning, and the sun was climbing higher in the sky outside my window. I’d been up for over twenty-four hours and was ready for the day to just be over.

As soon as I unlocked the door, Kian pushed his way in, his eyes finding mine immediately, and my heart dipped when I saw his frown.

“What happened last night?” he asked as soon as the door was closed behind him. “Why’d you leave—” He stopped talking when he noticed Jace behind me. Hurt flashed across his face for a split second before confusion took its place. “What the fuck happened to you?”

“Gage and I got into a little disagreement,” Jace told him gruffly.

“Gage?” Kian questioned, his eyes sweeping the room. “Where is he?”

“He had to go deal with something,” I mumbled, following Kian as he stalked toward the couch.

“He left you here with Jace? Alone?” His voice was full of skepticism.

Jace forced out a chuckle. “I don’t think he had a choice. Whatever he had to do seemed important.”

Kian turned back to me. “Where were you all night?”

Locked in Gage’s room until Alicia came looking for me and broke me out.

With a sigh, I looked between them. “We’re starting the new year off with a truce. No fighting if you’re in my room. I’m too tired to deal with it.”

Without waiting for a response, I spun around and headed to my bedroom. I didn’t even take the time to change before falling onto my bed and burying my head in my arms. There were slow footsteps coming from the living room, but I ignored them as I tried clearing my mind of everything.

“Can I fix it?”

My head shot up, and I turned slightly to see Jace leaning against the doorframe. When I didn’t answer, he came closer, not stopping until he was sitting on the bed.

“Fix what?” I asked as I spotted Kian in the doorway. He didn’t come into the bedroom but was clearly listening. I rolled over onto my back and scooted up until I was resting against the headboard.

“The reason you hate the Disciples,” Jace answered, making me look back at him in shock. “Whatever we did—I want to know if I can fix it.”
