“What? No.”

She was about to bolt, her body tense as she took another step away from me. Tripp appeared behind her, and he nodded at me while staying silent. He might have Grimrose ink on his forearm, but he was my friend first. He hadn’t hesitated when I asked for help with this.

“Tell me what’s going on,” she demanded.

“My dad wants you,” I told her quietly. “And now Chris found that out. They’re both planning to come to campus to take you. I’m getting you out before it happens.”

Her eyes searched my face before she crossed her arms. “I don’t need your help. If I need to get out, I have more than enough people to call. Give me my fucking phone.”

“Gage isn’t here to help. He left campus an hour ago, which is why I’m with you.”

She faltered slightly at my words, making me curious about how much she needed him. He’d proven again and again that he’d do anything to protect her. But whatever he was caught up with was changing that. Which meant it had to be pretty bad for him to leave me here with her, because I was positive he wouldn’t have done it unless he absolutely had to.

“Where is he?”

“I don’t know. But I don’t think he’s been completely honest with you.” I paused, deciding that I didn’t care if Gage wanted to keep this from her. She needed to know. “Why do you think he gave me your room key? Why do you think I’ve been with you when he hasn’t? He told me that there’s a threat against you.”

“What threat?” she hissed.

“He didn’t tell me.”

“Bullshit. If there was one, then my boss would know—”

“I don’t think your boss knows,” I cut in. “Whatever it is, he’s in it alone.”

She was silent for a long moment, and I didn’t miss the hurt flash across her face before she schooled her expression.

“I have more than just him that I can call,” she finally stated. “I’m going back to my room, and I’ll have the Riot Crew here before morning.”

“There’s not enough time for that.” I stepped toward her. “You don’t have hours to wait. I don’t know when Chris is coming. You need to get out. Now.”

“No.”

She spun around to run, letting out a surprised cry when she crashed right into Tripp. He grabbed her arms, but she slammed her knee into his groin, making him grunt in pain. His hold on her loosened enough that she slipped away, and I lurched forward, catching up to her before she could leave the trail and disappear in the woods. My arms wrapped around her waist, and I hoisted her into the air as she screamed and flailed.

“You have no right to do this, Kian,” she shrieked. “Get the fuck off me.”

“I’m getting you out,” I said firmly. “I fucking swear, Rynn. I’m doing this to help you. You don’t trust me enough to keep you safe, that’s fine. Once we’re out of Little Haven, you can call whoever you want, and I’ll leave once I know you’re good.”

She fell still, and I took advantage of it, quickly moving forward toward that back road where I had Tripp park a car earlier. Tripp was cursing under his breath, shooting Rynn a dark look as he tried keeping pace with me.

“Where are we going?” she asked tightly.

“A motel about two hours from here.”

“Chris is really coming for me?” she questioned, wriggling in my arms until I let her feet touch the ground. She walked next to me, and I relaxed slightly now that she wasn’t resisting.

“My dad was pretty sure about it,” I answered, digging the keys from my pocket as the trail opened onto the road.

“I do trust you to keep me safe,” she murmured before glancing at Tripp. “But that doesn’t mean you can try to force my hand.”

“Point taken,” Tripp muttered, giving her a forced grin. “I’d rather not get hit in the balls again.”

“Give me my phone,” she demanded, focusing back on me.

With a sigh, I pulled it out and handed it to her. She stared at it before her eyes darted to me, and she put it in her pocket. “You didn’t tell Jace about this?”

“No.” The word was sharp, and she frowned. “Chris has a hold on Jace. One so fucking tight that I’m not sure Jace could go against him. I don’t trust him not to turn on me.”
