“Going somewhere?” King asked, pushing his hair out of his eyes.

“You’re late,” I snapped. “I have things to do.”

“No,” he tsked, shaking his head. “Nothing is more important than doing what I want.”

“Then tell me what you want,” I forced out through clenched teeth.

“How do you like college?” he asked, raising his hand to get the server’s attention. “I don’t see you as someone who loves going to class.”

“It’s fine.”

“You’ve been pretty evasive about who you work for,” he murmured, studying my reaction. “The family has a hunch about who helped you as a kid, but there’s no proof.”

My heart hammered against my ribs. “I left on my own.”

“They know that’s not true.” He chuckled cruelly. “To hide from them for this long? No. You had help.”

“You could have asked this over the phone,” I gritted out.

“Yes, I could have.” He smirked before taking the drink the server brought him. “But I like this. Having you at my beck and call.”

Rage flushed through me, and my grip on the beer glass tightened as I glared at him. This prick was working my last nerve.

“Why drag it out?” I snarled. “They want me back, I’ll fucking go.”

“I already told you. They want you here.”

My chest heaved as I reined in my anger. I was enjoying every extra second with Rynn because I knew, at some point, they’d make me leave. But having him threaten Rynn was tainting it all. I needed to just disappear so she wasn’t on their radar anymore.

“Little Haven really is an interesting city, isn’t it?” he asked quietly. “So many want it.”

“Sure,” I clipped out, not in the mood to entertain whatever game he was playing.

“Grimrose and the Disciples called a truce. Word is they were going to take the city together.” He paused, the wicked gleam in his eye making my pulse thud. “Which makes it even more interesting that we just made a deal with one of them behind the other’s back.”

That got my attention, and I straightened up. Dark amusement filled his eyes, and I swallowed thickly, realizing there was a much more malicious reason he brought me here.

“What are you talking about?” I asked stiffly.

“Grimrose wanted something they couldn’t get. So we helped.”

Dread crawled through my veins. “Helped how?”

He cocked his head. “You tell me. What have they been trying to get recently?”

Hewas nottalking about Rynn. He fucking couldn’t be. But as I stared at him, I had a feeling she was exactly who he was talking about. I shot up from my seat, reaching for my gun, but he only laughed while his gaze went toward the bar.

“I wouldn’t,” he warned. “I didn’t come alone.”

I snapped my head to the side, seeing three men sitting on barstools, turned away from the bar and looking right at us. I blew out a shaky breath, forcing myself to sit back down. I wouldn’t be able to go after Rynn if I pissed them off.

“She is the only reason I’ve been following your fucking orders,” I growled. “Because you promised to leave her alone.”

He raised his hands. “I kept my word. We didn’t touch her.”

“Does Grimrose have her?”

“No idea.” He took a long sip of his drink. “I only promised to keep you busy.”
