The awkwardness in the air diffuses as they turn back to their plates, probably assuming that I am just in love with the oysters.

“Thank you, Parker. They were freshly delivered this afternoon and please call me Victoria,” she says.

The evening effortlessly moves on and the chef, a tall female in her mid-thirties appears at our table to deliver the main course which is the chef’s suggestion.

Onglet steak with black garlic butter and silverbeet, paired with a dark red wine and has me internally salivating.

“What do you plan to do after college, Parker?” John says as Hudson finally removes his hand from my thigh.

“I’m majoring in Literature and taking a Creative Writing workshop, so I’m currently applying for internships at publishers,” I explain as I slice a tender piece of steak that’s cooked medium-rare. “Hopefully, I can get an editorial job and get into that field of work.”

John sets his mouth into a firm, line, clearly unimpressed. “I would have imagined you would have wanted to continue in your father’s architecture business.”

The steak is amazingly good but suddenly tastes unpleasant in my mouth at John’s judgemental reply.

I feel Hudson grow stiff beside me and my eyes flicker to him, to catch a glimpse of him staring at his father.

“Then again not everyone is obsessed with becoming a rich bastard,” Hudson says quietly, but we all hear his words clearly.

John smiles and nods, before his gaze shifts back to me and I suddenly feel uncomfortable with his cold green eyes on me.Like a snake,I think.Just waiting to attack.

Victoria leaves her fork down and stares at her plate and I watch as she takes in a deep shaky breath, whilst Matt appears on edge, his eyes moving back and forth between Hudson and his father.

“How would you survive on an editorial salary? Or do you just plan on marrying rich like my beautiful wife here?” John asks, the corners of his mouth lift, but nothing is amusing about his words.

Hudson abruptly pushes his chair back and stands up, grabbing my hand with his, so I have no choice but to stand up too.

I can feel the pairs of eyes staring at us as the tension in the air grows.

“You know what, fuck you,” Hudson hisses. I can feel the rage in his body as he trembles beside me. “And fuck what you think and fuck your money too!”

He pulls me along with him as the other guests stare after us and I watch with tears blurring my vision as they whisper, some of them outwardly shaking their heads with disgust.

The sky is dark and the evening air is icy when Hudson and I get into his mustang.

I silently watch as he loosens his tie around his neck, before punching the steering wheel with his fist.

“Fuck,” he swears, resting his forehead on the wheel. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have fucking brought you here.”

“It’s okay,” I whisper, reaching out and pressing my palm against his back.

“He’s a fucking cunt and when he drinks, he can’t keep his mouth shut.” Hudson turns his head to look at me and I slip my fingers into his hair, before ruffling it.

“It’s okay. I get it.”

“Can I make it up to you?” he asks.

“How are you going to do that?”

My phone suddenly buzzes with a message and I’m about to ignore it when another message comes through.

“Well,” Hudson leans forward, his breath in my ear as I unlock my phone. “I have a lot of ideas.”

My stomach drops when the message opens:

Hi, Parker. This is Ryan’s mom. Just wanted to let you know Ryan had an accident last night and was severely injured. He’s in and out of sleep and he’s been asking for you. He’s at Manhattan Central Hospital right now
