He casts his gaze down and shakes his head. “No, but I will be.”

“I want you to be happy.”

Guilt fills me. In all of this, I’ve been so stuck in my own head, my own worries and problems. I forgot about him. I know, despite his hard exterior, that mafia boss brutality, he carries his emotions. He hides behind that funny, cheeky guy.

In all of this, he is struggling, too.

“When I wake up with you in my arms every day, that's when my life will truly begin.”

I crash my lips over his.

He slips the ring inside his suit jacket. I hide the panic, I need that back, I don’t want to poke Dante the bear when he’s home. I need to pick my fights carefully. I don’t want Luca pressing the subject.

He pulls back and pushes a stray lock of hair behind my ear. “We have all night, and trust me, we will make use of every single second. But I’d like to take you on a date. Is that okay?”

I squeeze my legs together to try to relieve the building pressure. This is the sweetest thing; he just wants to spend time with me.

“I’d love that, Luca. Thank you.”

With a gentle hand behind my waist, he leads me to his car where he tucks me into the passenger seat before sliding behind the wheel.

“So, where are we going?”

He shoots me a grin with a twinkle in his eye as we pull up outside the movie theater.

“A movie night?” I beam.

“Just like we used to.” He winks, making my heart flutter.

Itug her into my side, nodding past the cinema attendant. I’ve booked out the entire building for the next four hours. She points to the marquee in the lobby. “It has our names over the door!” she says, full of excitement, grabbing another handful of popcorn.

I don’t know what spies Romano has on me, so I booked the entire place for us. No one will see us. I paid well to make sure.

“What are we watching?” she asks, looking up at me with wide eyes.

“Whatever the hell you want to, baby.”

She purses her lips, deep in thought, and then a mischievous look passes across her face.

“Do you like horror films?”

I don’t know the last time I watched one. My life right now is pretty much one.

“I guess.” I shrug my shoulders.

“You guess? Are you sure you’re not scared of ghosts?” She grabs the popcorn from my hands, not taking her eyes off of me.

“There is only one thing that truly scares me, Rosa.”

She raises an eyebrow. “Hmm?” she says through a mouthful of food.

“Losing the people I love.”

She nods in agreement. I shake my head. It clearly hasn’t registered what I mean.
