“Ignore her. My fiancé is just drunk. I’m taking her home.”

I hear another guy chuckle, and he swiftly carries me to the exit.

“Baby girl, everything is going to be okay. I came back for you, just like I always promised,” he whispers as we get outside, the freezing air hitting my sensitive skin.

Hot tears stream down my face. I can’t move. I can barely breathe.

I hear the clicking of the car and the door opening. He bends and slides me into the passenger seat. I squeeze my eyes closed as he leans over me and buckles me in.

“Don’t you dare fucking move, Rosa. You know what happens if you disobey me.” He smirks, and I’m back to being the naïve seventeen-year-old again. The one who was too scared to say no to him. I know what he’s capable of. So I do as he says.

He doesn’t take his dark eyes off me as he circles the front of the car and slips into the driver’s seat.

“Time to take you to our new home, Rosa. We can finally have our forever.”

My head whips around to face him.

“What do you mean?” I look down at my trembling hands as his huge fingers lace through mine.

“It’s all been agreed with your uncle. We’re getting married in two months. You’ll finally be mine.” A wide grin lights up his face.

“Uncle Frankie would never–”

I stop myself. Dad banished Frankie before it came to light about Dante. Which means Frankie doesn’t know anything about what this monster did to me.

“I don’t want to marry you.” I don’t know where my bravery comes from, but the words fly out of my mouth.

“It doesn’t matter what you want. The deal’s been made and I suggest you get on board. That is, unless you want me to take precious Eva instead. I hear she’s still pure. I bet she would feel even better–”

“No!” I cut him off. I can’t hear it.

He’s not taking my baby sister. Not her. Terrifying images of him doing to her what he did to me flash through my mind. Fear surges through me. His malicious laugh fills the car. The same sound that plagued my sleep for the last six years.

“Always protecting her, aren’t you? I stopped by your house earlier. She’s definitely aged well–the perfect woman.”

I swallow the bile rising up my throat, shaking my head.

“Well, it’s settled, then. Here’s to our forever, baby girl,” he says, turning on the ignition.

His hand settles on my thigh, and he squeezes. His touch burns my flesh. Tears fall down my cheeks. I focus on my breathing, just like Dr. Jenkins taught me.

“I made Frankie a promise to protect you. I love you, Rosa. I’ve loved you since the day I started working for your dad. So, I want to win over your heart. I want to do this the right way this time. But, remember, if you don’t catch on quickly, poor little baby Eva will pay the price.”

I turn to face him, anger bubbling inside.

“And this is how you think you’ll win me over?” I spit out, unsure of this confidence.

“In time, Rosa, you’ll learn to love me. You have to if you want to keep Eva alive. I’m prepared to wait. As long as you behave, that is.”

He gives me a warning look and tightens his grip on my leg.Pain radiates from the bruising force of his fingers.

“You’re hurting me,”I whisper.

He releases his hand quickly. My eyes zone in on the angry red marks now on my skin. The first of many, I assume. Men like him don’t change, they can’t.
