“You’re gonna rip all my hair out.” I reach for the comb, but it brings my chest closer to his…close enough for my nipples to brush his sternum.

He doesn’t react except for a slight tensing of his jaw. His smile stays intact. He looks so…different. “Lemme do this for you.”

“Why?”

“Been such a good Omega. Wanna take care a’ you.” He separates my hair into sections, four big clumps. And then he sets to work. “My job.” Little by little, he works the wide teeth of the comb through the matts that make up my red curls. At the same time, he works his calm through my anger, gently teasing it out, too. “A job I been suckin’ at.”

“Wh…what?”

His hand stills on the back of my neck where he’d been kneading it firmly, gently, coaxing me into leaning my weight against his hand, letting him hold me. “I don’t wanna fall into rut because I haven’t won the right to breed you. Did, but then I lost it. Twice. First time, when I couldn’t bond you. Second, when I couldn’t protect you from other Alphas…”

“The dead ones?”

“Dead or alive, I still woulda lost you to them if you hadn’t…”

“No. No.” I shake my head fiercely and close my eyes, hating what he’s saying and hating that I can’t just…agreewith him.

“Echo…”

“No, it wasmyfault.”

“Echo.” He spins me on his lap so that I’m facing to the side, my hip pressed to his cock. The comb is somewhere stuck in my hair, so he has both hands free. One gently cradles my injured arm while the other one tips my chin up, forcing me to look at him. “Listen to me. None of that shit was your fault.”

I touch his chest, place my wounded hand over the scar on his heart, focusing on it so that I don’t have to meet his eyes. “I couldn’t use my Omega instinct…”

“‘Cuz I hurt you. And you did save me.”

“I wanted to…but the other Omega. She saved us.”

His brow crinkles. He pulls me closer, and even though his dick is hard, sex and instincts and what we want from each other, the only thing we want from each other —at least, the only thing I want from him— are pushed aside for the moment. “How?”

“You didn’t…you didn’t hear her?” I flick my gaze up to his. He looks murderous.

“Nuh.”

“Oh.”

“What she do, Echo?”

“She summoned me.”

His front teeth slam together. His fangs elongate. I tense, panicked, and try to jerk away but he holds me still. “Not possible.”

I nod. “She did. She told me to bury them in the earth and I did.”

“Fuck me.”

“She told me to bury you, too.”

“Fuck her.”

I sniffle. “But I didn’t.” I called himmine. I claimed this Berserker in front of another Omega, binding him to me in a way thatmatters.Maybe, that was it. The moment that changed everything…And yet, that claiming is the only significant bond between us because I’ll never be his wife. He already has one of those. Where is she?

“Why?” He looks so concerned, I want to smooth the wrinkles out of his forehead with my tongue — my hand, just my broken fucking fingers. But I don’t. I might have bound him to me, but he can’t even do the same. He has a wife. Besides, he’s a Berserker. I don’t even want him to. Yeah…the taste in my mouth isn’t jealousy. It’s just toothpaste.

Right.

I try to pull my hand away from his chest, but he holds it there and inhales so deep, I rise on his chest. “Why, Echo?”
