Lowerin’ her in my arms enough to be able to whisper into her hair, I say, “You stopped takin’ the suppressants. You’re nearin’ heat.”

I climb a flight of stairs down and then another, then push through the door that leads me out of the manor and onto the enclosed winter porch, then finally out into the garden. Echo’s been spendin’ time in the garden house, even though it’s Beta quarters —servants’quarters.

I haven’t asked her why she’s comin’ out here and I don’t mind. The manor feels like it’s still got stains of the Berserker before on it, and I don’t like the idea of those stains rubbin’ off on her. Also don’t like her near so many Alphas, comin’ and goin’. And Ihopeshe’s been comin’ out here to nest…though, knowin’ my Omega, that might be too much to hope for.

“About the Ball. I just…I’m not ready to be out with a bunch of Alphas. I don’t want that.”

“Gonna be with you the entire time.” My fuckin’ house shoe sinks into mud. Goddammit. I glance around the misty world wrapped around us, wishin’ it were possible to shield my Omega from it. I never took care about my garden before and I had to pluck the flower Omega from the Omega garden. Fuck.

“What is it?”

“Nothin’.”

“You’re thinkin’ something.” She taps my temple with one short nail. “Thinking,” she corrects, but I heard it and grin.

“Don’t tell me your Berserker’s rubbin’ off on you, Echo.” I laugh as I lower my gaze to the retina scan, then shove the front door to my garden house open. I step into the quiet and lock the door behind me.

“My Berserker isn’t…but maybe Adam is…”

A needle of need cracks through my armor and pierces me with the pointy end. I bleed, but that’s fine, she could bleed me dry if she wanted.

Wait. Wait, she’s injured. Wait,I’minjured.

“Am I rubbing off on you at all?” She asks, and the tentative vulnerability in her tone is too much to take.

Fuck waiting.

I move forward roughly, slamming her into the wall, though I’ve still got presence a’ mind enough to cradle the back of her head. My mouth charges towards hers and I bite her lip, not hard enough to draw blood, but I want to. God, I want to.

I rear back and force her chin up, then kiss my way down her chest. I’m panting against her collarbone, feelin’ her body shiver in my grip. She’s needy, my little Omega, and and even though her lips are slack with surprise, her hands are pullin’ harder and harder on my hair. She’s tryna move me back up her body, but I can’t have it.

She moans, “Adam.” Alright, maybe, I can.

I taste her lips, pluckin’ at ‘em more gently this time around. Trying desperately to be gentle…or somethin’. “Tell me if I’m hurtin’ you, baby. Please.”

“Oh god, Adam. I need…need…”

“Take me to your nest.” Fuck. That’s not what I meant to say. I wanted her to invite me herself.

“I…what?”

“Your nest. Know you’re buildin’ it here.” When she doesn’t say anything, I take the reins of control in a death grip and pull the fuck back. “Fuck.” I come up gasping for air and her body drops down the wall. She clings to my shoulders with both hands, but I gently remove her bandaged arm.

“No, Adam. Please. I want…don’t be an asshole.”

“You don’t want me in your nest, that’s fine, I know I don’t deserve it. I know I might not ever, but I thought…for the first time…you might want to do it where you feel safest and most comfortable. If that’s not what you want, I won’t ask to see your nest again.” I rub my hand up and down my face, struggling to meet her gaze and the look of horror in her eyes and the blush staining every inch of her cheeks.

“You want me to send Ward up here? There’s more heat suppressants if you need ‘em.”

“No!” She grabs my arm the minute I so much as flinch like I’ll turn towards the door. Her eyes are still huge and I can hear her heartbeat through her chest like she’s havin’ a damn panic attack. “I told you already I don’t like the heat suppressants. I want…I want…” She gulps in air like she’s fuckin’ drownin’.

“Want what?”

“You know.”

I frown. “What is it?”

And then the damn woman runs off.
