We stay like that for ages as she drifts down to earth, me thrusting gently, just enjoying being inside her, and her limp on the mattress, arms above her head, powerless to do anything but lie there and sigh.

Eventually, she opens her eyes to look into mine and starts laughing.

“I’m so incredibly sticky,” she complains. “Oil and sweat and… you know.”

“Half of it’s on me,” I remind her. “I think we need a shower.”

Her eyes widen. “Together?”

I kiss her again, tenderly this time. “Of course. I don’t want to spend a second more than I have to apart from you this weekend.”

I lift up, my skin peeling from hers and making us both laugh, and then I help her up, and we go into the bathroom. I set the shower running, and when the water’s hot, we go into the cubicle and stand beneath the spray.

I like showers and so the cubicle isn’t small, but I stand close to her anyway as the water soaks us both. I dip my head beneath the spray, then say, “Can you grab the shampoo?”

She picks it up and squeezes some onto her hand, then begins to massage it into my hair. I sigh as she works her fingers across my scalp, then turns me to rinse it beneath the water.

“My turn.” I wash her hair, too, and then it’s time to wash our bodies. We pour a generous amount of shower gel onto the sponge, and then I give it to her and lean back against the glass and let her smooth the sponge across me.

“You’re all brown and shiny,” she murmurs. “Like polished wood.” She cleans me almost reverently, moving the sponge across my shoulders and down my chest, exploring my muscles, and drawing a finger through the wet hairs.

She seems fascinated by my pecs and abs and nipples, and I let her take her time, enjoying the attention, and liking the fact that I’m the first guy she’s done this with.

“You have a magnificent body,” she says.

“Why, thank you.”

“I mean it. You’re so handsome, Kip. So gorgeous. How come you’re not married with six kids right now?”

Because I was waiting for you.

I don’t say it. But I think it.

Instead, I say, “I’m a free spirit.”

She laughs, turning me around so she can soap my back. “That you are, my friend.”

I lean on the glass and let her stroke the sponge over my shoulders and down my spine. Then she gets to my butt and spends an inordinate amount of time soaping it.

“I think it’s clean,” I say after approximately an hour.

“I’m enjoying myself,” she protests.

I laugh, turn back, and take the sponge from her. “My turn.”

“Oh dear.” She looks down at my erection. “Already?”

“Just ignore it. It’s like a dog chained up in the garden. It’s gonna bark at everything that walks past the house.”

She giggles, and I grin and start washing her. I cover her torso in soapy suds, cleaning her shoulders, her arms, her breasts, and down over her tummy. Then I drop to my haunches to wash her legs. Finally I pass the sponge between her thighs, wash the suds away, then lean forward and slide my tongue into her folds. She sighs, and I swirl my tongue over her clit a few times before kissing up over her belly and back up to her mouth.

She puts her arms around my neck, and we stand like that for a while, kissing while the water spray rinses us, just enjoying being together and touching one another.

Eventually I turn off the shower, and we get out and dry ourselves, pull on clean tees and underwear, change the bottom sheet, laughing at all the wet patches of oil and other fluids, then go upstairs to get ourselves some lunch. I make us a chicken salad sandwich, and we take it with a packet of chips and a coffee back to bed. We check our phones, reply to a few messages, then sit and talk while we eat.

She says she’s had a text from Charlie saying her mum’s well and they’re enjoying their time together. I ask her about her father, and for the first time she tells me about the day he had a heart attack, and what a shock it was for her and Charlie. And she tells me how it was only weeks afterward that her mother started getting eye pain, blurred vision, and electric-shock sensations down the left side of her body.

We talk about her mother’s disease and its progression. She explains how Penny has constant fatigue, and the pain means she only sleeps for a couple of hours at a time. Alice helps her visit the bathroom and bathe, pushes her in the wheelchair, and basically does most things for her. But it soon becomes clear that her main worry is Penny’s mental health.
