He kisses my bottom lip and nibbles it. “And did you touch yourself while you were in here? Make yourself come?”

“Might have.”

He finds the bottom of my tee and slides his hands up it onto my back. “My sexy Alice,” he whispers, “there’s no stopping you now we’ve set you free, is there?”

“Not while you’re around.”

I meant that I feel sexy whenever I think about him, but he says, “I’m not going anywhere,” and I realize that he thought I was saying our time together is finite. “I’m not letting you go now I’ve found you,” he tells me fiercely, and then he pulls my head down to his, turning the dial up to eleven for a searing kiss.

He kisses me until I’m breathless with longing, and strokes me until my body’s throbbing with need. And then I remove my jeans, climb back astride him, and make love with him, our bodies moving together in perfect unison. I know we could come together, but I also know that he enjoys watching me as much as I enjoy watching him, and so I let him take me all the way, clenching around him with powerful pulses that make us both gasp, and then I get to watch his face as his climax takes him, feel his body tighten, and his deep groan rumble through him as he spills inside me.

I lean against him while we calm and quieten, his words echoing through me as if my whole body is a bell.I’m not letting you go now I’ve found you. For the first time I feel a glimmer of hope. Is it possible there could be a future for us? I’m still not sure how it could work long-term. But maybe he’s right, and I should put my fears to one side, and just concentrate on the here and now, on him still hot and hard inside me, on the smell of his cologne, and the warmth of his neck against my lips.

Sunday and Monday pass in much the same way. The weather is changeable, but rather than rant and rail against it, we organize ourselves around it, going out when it’s fine, and staying in when it’s wet. Tuesday—Valentine’s Day—dawns gray and overcast, but the forecast suggests the clouds will clear before midday, so we’re hopeful it’s going to be nice for Gina’s wedding.

Kip is asleep when I wake up, so I go out to the kitchen and start making us all a cup of coffee. Mum’s awake, but she’ll sit in bed while she drinks hers before I help her into the bath and we start getting ready for the big day.

I’m just steaming the milk when he comes out, looking sleepy and gorgeous, dressed in a tee and track pants, his feet bare, and his hair all ruffled.

“Hey, gorgeous,” I say as he walks up behind me and slides his arms around my waist.

“Hey you.” He nuzzles my neck. “You smell divine.”

“Mmm. So do you.”

He kisses my neck. Then he places something on the counter in front of me. “Happy Valentine’s Day.”

I stare at it. It’s a long, rectangular, black velvet box. The kind that contains jewelry.

“Oh Kip.” Suddenly, my hands are shaking.

“Go on, open it.”

Gently, I lift the lid. It contains what I think is called a tennis bracelet—a line of gemstones connected by a precious metal chain.

“Are they…” I gulp. “Are they diamonds?”

“Ten carats total,” he says, “in white gold.”

I’ve never even seen such an expensive piece of jewelry, let alone touched it, let alonewornit.

“I thought you might like to wear it to the wedding.” He pries it from the box, loops it around my wrist, and fastens it.

I turn my wrist, watching the gemstones sparkle in the early morning sunlight. “Kip… it’s beautiful.”

“You like it?”

“Of course I like it. You shouldn’t have, of course.”

“I can’t buy nice jewelry for my girlfriend?”

It’s the first time he’s called me that, and I give him a shy smile. “I’m embarrassed to show you my gift now.”

“Ah, you didn’t have to get me anything.”

I reach over for the box containing his present and pass it to him. His arms still around me, he takes off the paper and opens it. It’s a guitar capo, engraved with the phrase ‘Love from Alice’ and a heart.
