“I guess it’s a ballpark thing. They have the same buttons, and if you press them in the same order, something good normally happens. More or less.”
“More or less of what?”
“Jesus. It’ll just be easier to show you. Basically you’re right; you’re not all the same. Some girls like different buttons being pressed.”
“Are you talking about slot D again?”
We both start laughing.
“You’re a lot of fun,” I tell her, smiling. “And that’s even before we’ve gotten to the bedroom.”
“I thought that—” She stops as my phone, which is sitting on the table, vibrates.
I glance at it. It’s a text from Lesley. The first line of it is visible. Just wondering if you’ve… I exhale, then look back at Alice.
“I don’t mind if you want to read it,” she says.
“No, it’s okay. It’s not important.”
“You’re sure?” she asks. “You frowned.”
I look back at the phone. “It’s someone I don’t particularly want to hear from.”
“A girl?”
I turn my glass around in my fingers.
“Your girlfriend?” Alice asks.
“I wouldn’t be here with you if I had a girlfriend.”
“All right. Don’t glare at me. Not every guy is as honorable as that. So… not your girlfriend. But someone who was special to you?”
I sigh. “She’s my ex.”
“Okay. How long ago did you break up?”
“Oh, a couple of years ago.” I stretch out my legs. Alice’s face is kind, encouraging me to talk about it. “She got a job in Australia, without telling me. We ended up breaking up over it. Then a year later she came back to New Zealand. I thought it was for good, and we dated for a couple of months. Then out of the blue she said she was going back. I felt like such a fool. I thought she’d come back to be with me.” I scowl at the memory. “She called last night to say she’s here again.”
“And she asked to see you?”
“Not at first. She told me she’s getting married.”
“Oh.”
“Then she said she wanted to meet up.”
Her eyebrows rise. “Meet up? Or hook up?”
“Not sure.”
“Even though she’s marrying another guy?”
“Yeah.”
“What did you say?”
“I ended the call.”
