“You don’t think so now?”

“Mmm. No.” She licks her lips, then stretches out next to me, and we face each other, heads propped on our hands. “I’m sorry you got that text today,” she says. “You looked very fed up at that point.”

I sigh. “It came at the end of an odd couple of days.”

“In what way?” She looks genuinely interested, and suddenly I want to talk about it.

“I told you that I work for a company that does research into robotics?”

“Yeah.”

“Actually, I own the company with Saxon and my younger brother, Damon.”

“Oh?” Her eyebrows rise.

“We have a senior leadership team of five. One of them is someone I went to university with. He’s a smart guy. Normally hardworking and supportive. But yesterday he blew up, yelled at me in a meeting, then walked out.”

“Oh, that’s awkward.”

“Yeah. I’ve tried to call him, but his phone is turned off. I’m debating whether to go and see him, but I don’t even know if he’s at the family home.”

“Does he have a landline there you could call?”

“I think so.”

“It might be slightly less awkward if his wife answers the phone than if you turned up at the house and he wasn’t there.”

“True.” I hadn’t thought of that.

I smile at her. She smiles back.

“I can’t believe you wouldn’t let me change position,” I tell her. “Out of all the things I have up my sleeve, you chose missionary.”

“I was enjoying it. Not to say I wouldn’t enjoy trying your catalog. Shame we only have the one night.” She sighs.

“We’ll see.”

She frowns then. “Kip… I told you, I’m not in a position to have a relationship.”

“Okay.”

“I just can’t right now.”

“Fair enough.”

She glares at me. “You don’t mean that.”

“You’re right, I don’t.”

“That’s not fair,” she says softly. “You should respect my wishes.”

Used to getting my own way, I narrow my eyes. “Can you tell me why you can’t have a relationship?”

She drops her gaze and plays with a fold of the bedsheet.

“We’re friends now,” I say gently. “And I’d like to see you again. If you’re going to refuse, don’t you think I deserve to know why?”

She lifts her gaze back to mine. “I guess.” She sighs. “It’s not a state secret or anything. My mum has M.S.”
