The next time I open my eyes, it’s daylight. I blink, and then my eyes widen as I see Kip lying on his side, head propped on a hand, watching me.

“Morning,” he says.

“Oh. Morning.” I lift up, brush a hand over my face, making sure I haven’t been drooling, then run my fingers through my hair. “Oh no. I bet I look as if I’ve stuck my fingers in an electric socket.”

He smiles. “It is quite wild.” He lifts a hand, picks up a strand, and runs it through his fingers. Then he slides his hand to the back of my head and pulls me toward him, rolling onto his back. Laughing, I fall onto his chest, and he gives me a long, luxurious kiss.

When he finally releases me, I glare at him and say, “I have morning breath.”

“You tastesweet as.” He runs his hands down my back.

I kiss his nose. Reaching over him, I tap my phone where I left it on the bedside table. It’s 07:19. Aw. I’d hoped to wake earlier, but I didn’t think to set my alarm. “Ah. I need to get ready. Charlie’s coming at eight. We wanted to get an early start.”

“Yeah, I need to get to work. I’m normally in by seven thirty.”

“Saxon will know you got lucky.”

He chuckles. Then he slides his hands down and strokes over my butt. “How are you feeling today?”

I wince. “Tender.”

“I’m sorry.”

“So you should be. Ravaging me like that.”

“Yeah, because you didn’t enjoy it at all.”

“Not one bit. Didn’t you hear me complaining at great length?”

“No.” He pulls my head down and gives me a long kiss. “It had to be done.” He kisses my nose. “And I’m glad I was the one to do it.”

“Me, too.”

“I’d like to have made love to you again,” he says reluctantly. “But I don’t want to hurt you.”

I am very sore, and as much as I want to have sex again, I think I’d wince all the way through it. “Kisses are almost as good,” I admit.

So he smiles and kisses me again, and we smooch for a while, taking our time.

Eventually he moves back, and we study each other for a long moment.

“Are you going to tell me your surname?” he asks.

“I don’t think so.”

“Mine’s Chevalier,” he says.

I give him an exasperated look. “Kip…”

He shrugs and lifts an eyebrow as if to say, ‘Too late now.’

“I’m still not going to tell you,” I say, and he sighs.

I kiss him again, taking my time, trying to tell him without words that I’m sorry, and that I wish I could tell him everything about me, but there’s no point, because this is hard enough, and I’m going to be upset anyway when we have to part.

“Come on,” he says when I eventually move back. “Let’s get ready.”

We rise and dress. I showered yesterday before our date, and so I just have a quick wash and pin my hair up. Kip says he’s going to go home and shower and change, so he pulls on his rather creased shirt and trousers he forgot to hang up last night. I get dressed in my jeans and a pink tee, then pack my small case. Finally, we have a long kiss and a hug before we go out and down to the elevator.
