“You’re in for a treat,” she says. “It’s the best restaurant in Wellington.”

My mouth opens, but no words come out as, down the corridor, I hear voices, and I turn and watch as two people walk into the office. One is a woman with short dark hair, dressed in a smart dark-gray suit—he’s mentioned his head of HR, Helen, and I wonder if it’s her. The other is a guy in a three-piece navy-blue suit, a crisp white shirt, a light-blue-and-silver-striped tie, and glasses. Oh my God, he’s gorgeous.

I needn’t have worried that the chemistry between us had disappeared. As soon as my gaze falls on him, I inhale sharply, and my heart immediately bangs on my ribs.

He’s looking at his phone, but as he enters the room he glances up. For a few seconds he stares at me as if he can’t quite believe I’m there. To my left, out of the corner of my eye, I see Saxon and Damon emerge to watch the scene with amusement, but I can’t tear my gaze from the guy whose brown eyes are fixed on mine.

I don’t know what to expect—whether he’ll come over and shake my hand, smile and politely say hello, or even just nod and turn to finish his conversation with the woman. But he doesn’t do any of those.

Instead, he thrusts his phone and briefcase at Helen, who fumbles and almost drops them, and then he strides across the room, bends and puts his arms around me, picks me up, and spins me around in a circle with a triumphant whoop.

“Aw,” Saxon says. “You old softie.”

Chapter Sixteen

Kip

“I missed you,” I tell Alice as I lower her down.

“I missed you, too.” She smiles, looking up at me with that expression on her face that makes my heart race, as if I’m a movie star, and she’s been waiting in line for my autograph for hours. She looks amazing, in a white dress that emphasizes her English-rose complexion, her wavy hair curling around her shoulders looking as soft as candy floss. Her makeup is subtle but sultry, her lips a dusky pink, and her blue eyes are sparkling. Jesus, I could eat her up in one bite.

“You okay?” Damon asks.

With some reluctance, I realize I should go over the details of the meeting. To my surprise, though, Helen says, “Don’t worry. I’ll fill them in if you want to head off.”

I glance over and find Saxon smiling at me. “Go on,” he says. “You two get going.”

“Thanks for picking her up,” I tell him, and he winks at me.

I look at Marion, who says, “There’s nothing here that won’t wait.”

“All right.” I collect my phone and briefcase from Helen, then hold my hand out to Alice. She slides her hand into it shyly, and I say, “See you guys later.”

“Nice to meet you,” they call to her, and we head out of the office.

We walk along the corridor, our fingers interlinking. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there to meet you,” I tell her.

“It’s okay. I embarrassed myself by thinking Saxon was you.”

“You’re not the first and you won’t be the last. Catie was completely confused when she first saw me and I didn’t recognize her. She actually fainted when Saxon came in.”

“Really?”

“Yeah. She was four months pregnant and she hadn’t eaten any breakfast, which didn’t help.” He pushes the door open, and we go out into the foyer.

“Bye, Mr. Chevalier,” the receptionist calls.

“’Bye Sasha.” He leads me through the open front door and out into the sunny day.

“’Bye Mr. Chevalier,” Alice echoes in a teasing voice.

“My staff is very respectful.”

“Should I call you Mr. Chevalier?”

“Actually I was going to ask you to.”

“Really?”
