“Yeah. The longer the better, obviously, but the midwife has told us to be ready, so we’ve got the go-bag all prepared.” He runs a hand through his hair, giving me a look that says he’s looking forward to it but is also terrified.

“You’ll be great,” I tell him. “You’re going to be a fabulous dad. Not as great as the uncle I’m going to be, but it’ll be a close thing.”

He chuckles. “I hear you’ve got a meeting with Lewis today?”

“Yeah, soon, actually.”

“Good luck. You know what you’re going to say?”

“I think so. I’ve had some good advice.”

His eyebrows rise. “From whom?”

“Juliette and…” I nearly say her name and stop. “A… um… lawyer,” I finish unconvincingly.

“Ooh,” he says, “a mystery girl. Anyone I know?”

“Nope.”

“That means yes.”

“No it doesn’t.”

“Are you blushing?”

“No.” Exasperated, I tug on my jacket. “I’m going to the meeting now.”

He pats me on the back. “Good to hear you’re back in the saddle.”

“Jesus. I fucking hate having older brothers.”

He laughs and heads out. “Good luck, bro.”

Sighing, I collect my phone and head down to the board room.

Lewis is already in there, sitting in the chair nearest the one at the head of the table. “Hey, Lewis,” I say, closing the door behind me and going over to the chair opposite him. “How are you doing?”

“Okay.” He’s the same age as me, an inch shorter, and quite a bit slimmer. His suit is off the peg, but it fits him well. He’s exceptionally good looking, like a movie star. I’m not surprised he’s popular with the women here.

“Thanks for coming in.” I adopt a relaxed pose, one ankle resting on the opposite knee, hands loosely linked. “Do you know what this is about?”

“No idea,” he says. He looks wary.

“I just want to have an informal chat at this point,” I tell him. “Helen was talking to one of the office juniors, and she mentioned that sometimes you come on a little too strong to her, and it makes her feel uncomfortable.”

His eyes widen. “You’re kidding me.”

“Unfortunately not. So I just wanted to talk to you about it.”

“Who was it?”

“Jessica Chaplain.”

He gives a short laugh. “Right.”

You know we have a written policy here at Kingpinz about sexual harassment?”

“Jesus, seriously?”
