“You can add sauce to the aesob or not, your choice. Be careful, though, it’s very tart.”

She dribbled a little onto one of her aesob halves, then scooped up a bite, sliding it into her mouth. Her eyes watered, and she swallowed hard. “Very sour,” she blurted out.

Brogis laughed. “Isn’t it? I hate the sauce. The aesob tastes better without it.”

We finished the course, and our staff took away our plates, bringing out another dish for each of us. After lowering them to the table, they stepped back.

Kassia studied her plate holding roast frilladon peppered with crisp, salty enderjumpers, plus sides of hoarbid roots and caralop sticks. She wisely didn’t touch her meal, waiting to see how we’d eat it.

I explained what each was, grateful that in this course, at least, we weren’t eating something very different from the food I’d had among humans.

We ate, chatting about general stuff like the weather and who had recently mated in the neighborhood.

“I’m surprised you have rain and even snow here,” Kassia said as the staff took the main course plates away. They brought out sweets, but they were much like what I’d found in the human world. Sugary treats were popular everywhere.

“Why wouldn’t we?” Mother asked, though fairly gently.

Kassia shrugged. “I’ve never been deep within the planet before. I didn’t realize your climate would be similar to ours on the surface.”

“You’ll find we're very much alike,” Dad said cheerfully. He rubbed his big hands together, looking down at his plate loaded with bite-sized sweets. “Now let’s dig into this treat.”

My brother left after dinner, kissing Kassia on the cheek again and giving me a nudge and whispered congratulations. “She’s the best, brother. Don’t lose her.” He shot Mother a sharp look as he said it.

“Why don’t we sit in the front parlor?” Mother asked after Brogis left.

“I think we’re tired,” I said, squeezing Kassia’s hand. “We’re going to go upstairs. We’ll see you for breakfast in the morning?”

Mother huffed but nodded. “Very well.”

“We can play a rousing game of mince,” my father told Mother. “I’m going to win, of course.”

She gave him a real smile, reminding me once more that they were true mates and she loved him as much as she did me and my brother. She leaned into his side as they walked toward the parlor, leaving us in the front hall. “I’m going to win, Roktas, so accept the idea right now.”

Kassia watched them with a soft smile. It widened when she looked up at me. “To bed, then?” Her eyes gleamed with a promise I couldn’t wait to savor.

My pulse surged, and my cock kicked against the front of my pants.

“Not yet, mate,” I said softly. “First, I need to take you to the forest.”

Chapter 14

Kassia

Finally. We’d been dating for what seemed like forever, and Jarum kept giving me samples that filled me up yet didn’t. It was time for the complete meal.

He took my hand, and we climbed one flight of stairs. But rather than continuing to the third floor and our room, he paused and nudging me against the wall, lifted and kissed me.

I was a moaning wreck in no time, succumbing to the desire he sparked inside me. One of his hands supported me while the fingertips of the other roamed up and down my side, teasing my breast and stroking my nipple.

He lowered me to the floor and cupped my face, staring down at me. “You’re the most wonderful person in the world. I love you. I’m going to claim you. Will you be my true mate tonight?”

“Your mother wants me to complete another test first.” I didn’t want to step on toes. At this point, I felt like I teetered on the edge with Drunella. The last thing I wanted to do was offend her. “What about following orc traditions?”

“Fuck them. I love you. I want to marry and mate with you, and nothing my mother says is going to change that.”

“Then yes, Jarum, I’ll be your true mate tonight.”

He kissed me again with hunger, making me crave him even more.
