Kylie gasps and glances at me, a flush spreading across her cheekbones and she swallows. The temperature in the room has warmed and she tugs at her sleeves as if she wants to strip.

Please.

Putting my glass down, I walk over to her and her eyes start flickering. I stop in my tracks. Does she even want me close?

I ignore the bile in my throat, asking, “You’re upset with me, aren’t you?”

She mutes the sound on the TV and looks at me, confusion clear on her face. I just want to grab her and kiss her until her sulky lips go numb.

“Why would I be upset?”

My hands go into my pockets and I drag a deep breath. “I refused to take you to that party and I know you wanted to go.”

Shrugging, Kylie whispers, “I’m sure you had your reasons.” Puckering her mouth, she blows her bangs out of her eyes. “But I’m a little disappointed because I didn’t get to see everyone’s faces when you showed up.”

“I prefer to keep an aura of mystery.”

A giggle escapes her before she turns serious. “How come you’ve never searched for your mate before?”

Rolling my eyes, I shake my head. “It’s not important.”

“To me it is.”

I look at her and she’s holding her breath, watching me with apprehension. She really does want to know.

“It happened a long time ago, when I was still a boy,” I murmur, “the urge to find my female kicked in earlier in me than most dragons.”

“Because you’re too powerful for your own good,” Kylie breathes and a reluctant smile curves my lips. I think I could live off of her praise alone.

“Maybe.” I cross my arms over my chest. “Anyhow, I was scouring when I saw a pretty girl chasing butterflies. For some reason, I thought that maybe she was my mate, so I flew over to her.”

“She must’ve been intrigued.”

“At first,” I reply, “at least enough to let me kiss her hand.”

“Aww...”

“Not really. Dragons only recognize their mate when they scent their blood. I was about to give her wrist a little nick when she let out a chilling scream at the sight of my teeth.”

“Whoa...,” Kylie breathes, slight shock on her face and I nod.

“I scared the life out of her. She told me to stay away, before she ran off, pale as a ghost”

Kylie stays silent, pinching her lips before lowering her head.

“It was the first time I realized how terrifying I am. It shamed me, my own nature seemed to be too much for others and I decided to keep to myself.”

Kylie may be ashamed of her weakness, but I’ve been ashamed of my strength and power. What a pair we are...

Silence fills the room.

“Craven,” Kylie then whispers slowly, “did that happen in a park called Grey Gardens?”

Surprise hits me in the chest and I stare at her. “Don’t tell me that was you?”

She nods. “I remember you, flapping your little wings while trying to bite me.” She lets out a surprised laugh before quieting and guilt flashes in her eyes. “I didn’t mean to be so hard on you, but you freaked me out.”

A stunned sound escapes me and I drag a hand down my face. I must’ve known somehow, even back then that she was mine.
