Her face flushes a bright red. She looks like she’s ready to protest, but then lowers her lids with a flattered expression in her eyes.

I clear my throat, trying to cool down. She seems insecure about her delicateness. I want to make her feel better but I don’t want to overstep.

“That means a lot coming from a Draugar,” Kylie whispers and I wince.

She noticed that, did she?

A smile crosses her face. “Must be nice being a royal.”

“I have nothing to compare it with; it’s all I’ve ever known.”

Putting her hands on the edge, she peers up at me with a curious expression. “I don’t think anyone in Frosted Falls has seen your male form, or much of your dragon form for that matter.” She tilts her head to the side. “How come you’re such a recluse?”

Shame flares in me. “I’ll get out and let you get dressed.”

Surprise crosses her face. “Did I say something wrong?”

“No,” I rasp, leaving the bathroom and I rub my jaw, regretting being curt with her when she was so open with me. I want her to warm up to me and feel at home, but I wasn’t ready to tell her yet.

The dragon slithers inside of me, worried I pushed her away but I think she’s okay. I can hear her humming and I listen to the sound of the terrycloth wiping droplets off of her body.

Grabbing a breath, I sit on the edge of my bed and drop my head in my hands. My temples pound and something is happening to me that’s out of the ordinary. Patience is something I have plenty of but suddenly I’m restless. I put a palm on my forehead.

It’s hotter than usual. Fuck, I’m burning up.

And there’s an erection down my pants that won’t let me catch a break. I wouldn’t be surprised if Kylie has noticed, but there’s nothing I can do about it. Other than put on a long sweater, I guess but I’m too warm.

My fists clench. I need Kylie.

I need her to pull me through this feverish haze and I straighten, looking up at the ceiling before taking a deep breath. Digging my teeth into my lower lip, I clench my sheets until they nearly rip.

“Mind if I use your hairdryer?” Kylie calls in a cautious tone and I flinch.

Didn’t even know I had one. “Go ahead.”

She turns it on and I hear her use my brush. It brings me a sense of satisfaction, calming down some of the ferocity. I’m going to keep her here with me for a while, but then I’ll have to let her go.

It would be wrong to force her to stay.

Whoever ends up in my lake is mine to do with whatever I please, but it’s different with her. I want to give her a choice...sharp pain pierces through me as if my inside was just nipped by sharp teeth. The dragon is not happy. He doesn’t care about her wishes and I wonder why he’s so adamant about keeping her.

Kylie is just a female. She’s not our mate.

Cold sweat streams down my back at the thought. I’m as tense as an iron rod when Kylie casually strolls out, dressed in my silk shirt. Her bangs are perfectly blown out and she’s sucking on her thumb.

“Your razor dropped from the sink and I accidentally cut myself when I picked it up,” she murmurs, then frowns. “Is everything okay?”

The room turns into a haze, including her and a buzzing starts brimming in me. She nicked her skin. Dragons recognize their mates by the scent of their blood.

And Kylie’s blood is a demand, a siren-song and a calling all at once. A wildfire rips through my veins when the dragon roars that this one is mine.

Kylie

Something’s up with Craven. When I walked out of the bathroom, he stared at me as if I had shocked him. Then his gaze darkened until it burned me so bad, I almost jumped.

Now, he watches me as if he pities me and his muscles clench, his fists tugging at the sheets. I take a step back when I get the feeling he’s going to lunge at me.
