When Lucia stopped crying, she sat up straight and wiped her eyes again. ‘I haven’t cried this much in two years,’ she said with a faint laugh. ‘Thank you again for letting me stay here tonight.’

I nodded. ‘You’re welcome.’

She smiled at me and something about the way she looked at me made me anxious. ‘Promise me you won’t run away, Lucia. I know you don’t like the Bakers, but I will speak to Alejandro and see what we can do.’

‘I hate it there, Alana,’ she whispered. ‘They hate me.’

‘Just give me time, sweetheart. I promise I am on your side, but there is red tape involved. I’d let you stay here if it was up to me.’

‘Thanks. But I’m pretty sure Alejandro won’t want me here. My family weren’t exactly…’ She shook her head. ‘It doesn’t matter anyway.’

‘I wish it were as simple as me convincing Alejandro to let you stay here. That’s the easy part,’ I said as I chewed on my lip.

For some reason that made Lucia laugh out loud.

I smiled at her as I saw a glimpse of the carefree teenager she should be. ‘What?’

‘The fact that you have so much control over the King of LA is funny, but so is the fact that you have absolutely no idea just how powerful he is, Alana. Red tape does not exist for a man like your husband.’

I frowned at her. ‘We can’t just take you in and keep you here, even if we wanted to.’

Lucia stood up and took a deep breath. ‘Alejandro Montoya can do whatever the hell he pleases, Alana, and you’re his wife, so that means you can too.’

CHAPTER 3

ALANA

I walked through the house with Lucia’s words still in my head. Was it true that Alejandro had such influence that we could just become her legal guardians? Just like that?

I knew that Lucia had lied to me, but I completely understood why. Despite who her family were, she was still a scared, sixteen year old girl with no-one to turn to. I had come to care for her a great deal in the short time I’d known her and I was certain that we had come into each other’s lives for a reason.

I closed the bedroom door behind me and walked toward the bed, my feet sinking into the plush carpet. Alejandro was lying with his hands behind his head staring at the TV. He glanced at me as I crossed the room but then turned back to the screen. He was still angry and I knew he was annoyed with me for suggesting that Lucia spend the night, but fortunately I also knew the perfect way to cure him of any bad mood.

I pulled my dress over my head and tossed it onto the floor before removing my bra and doing the same. Slipping under the covers, I pressed my body against his, placing my hand on his chest.

He grunted in response and I couldn’t help but smile. He was so hot when he was angry.

‘Thank you for letting Lucia stay,’ I purred.

‘She goes back to that family tomorrow,’ he snapped.

I resisted the urge to tell him that I wanted her to stay with us for the foreseeable future, or how much she hated her foster placement and how worried I was that she would run away again if we sent her back there. That could wait until he was in a better mood.

‘She’s just a child, Alex,’ I said instead.

He turned to me with a scowl on his face. ‘She’s dangerous, Alana!’

‘Her enemies might be, but she’s not.’

‘Same thing,’ he snorted.

I felt the anger flickering in my chest. ‘I can’t believe you have so little compassion for her. She’s a kid and she is terrified. She has no-one. I thought the cold hearted bastard routine was just an act you put on, but clearly I was mistaken.’

He moved before I could even finish my thought. Rolling on top of me, grabbing my wrists and pinning them flat to the pillow beside my head. ‘You think I’m a cold hearted cabrón?’

I looked into his dark eyes, full of fire and passion, and I shook my head. ‘I know that you’re not,’ I whispered. ‘So why won’t you help Lucia?’

‘I have helped her. I will. But that doesn’t include her staying here.’
