My father laughs at his response. “Ah, well. That’s a good thing, isn’t it?”

“Why aren’t you a good daddy then?”

My father draws in a deep breath before he speaks. “I didn’t used to be a very nice man.”

“I think you’re nice,” the kid says sweetly.

“Why, thank you,” my father ruffles the kid’s hair. “But back when Jax was little like you, I was mean and not much fun at all.”

“Why?”

I wonder when my father is going to tire of Matthias’ constant questions, but he goes on answering them. Even the difficult ones. Even though Matthias doesn’t always understand what he means, he tries to explain it in a way the kid will get most of it.

“I don’t have a daddy,” Matthias says and his little voice sounds so sad that it breaks my heart.

“I know. Some of us don’t,” my father agrees.

“I’d like a daddy though,” he beams as he swings his legs on the seat.

“You would, huh?”

“Yeah. One just like Jax.”

“Well, you couldn’t go wrong with a dad like my Jackson. He’s the best kind of man there is.” My father wraps his arm around the kid and they sit in silence as my heart feels like it’s going to turn into a puddle of mush. What the fuck is wrong with me?

“Hey,” Lucia sneaks up behind me and slides an arm around my waist. “Don’t those two look cute together?” She nods toward my father and her son.

“Yeah,” I say, the word sticking in my throat.

“I took them some lemonade but then Matthias told me I could go back inside. I felt like I was being dismissed by my own four-year-old,” she laughs softly. “Is everything okay, Jax?”

“What?” I blink at her.

“You seem distracted.”

“Oh yeah. I just spoke to your father. He found the guy.”

She sucks in a deep breath. “He did? Who is he?”

“I don’t know yet. He’s holding him until I get back. He’s sending the plane for us now, so we should pack up. We’ll need to leave in a few hours.”

“Oh.” She looks as disappointed as I feel.

I pull her back so we’re hidden by the house and wrap my arms around her waist. “I have loved every second of being here with you, but we have to go home, Angel.”

“I know.” She places her hands on my chest. “I was just starting to love it here. Your aunt Molly is so nice. Matthias loves the horses and he’s even conquered his fear of dogs. I’ll miss it.”

“That’s all you’re going to miss?” I arch an eyebrow at her.

“Well, I won’t have to miss you, will I?” she purrs and my cock stands to attention. I swear she has a direct line to him.

“No, Angel.”

“Nothing is going to change is it, Jax?”

“We have to tell him. I can’t lie to his face, Luce.”

She smiles at me. “I know, but not as soon as we land though?”
