I shook my head. “Unfortunately not. I applied a while back but never heard anything about it. I work in a small law firm across town.” The commute was abysmal, and they didn’t trust me to do anything but bring snacks and coffee, but it was all I could find. I’d really hoped to land a job at the same company as Alan, so we could stick close, but it wasn’t to be, I guess.

He studied me. “You’re a lawyer?”

“Do I look like one?” I smiled.

His frown finally lifted a little, and a ghost of a smirk crossed his face. “I’m not answering that. It’s a trap.”

Giggling, I shook my head. “I promise, it’s not. No, I’m not a lawyer. I’m a secretary. For now, I guess.”

“You don’t like it?”

“It’s not that I don’t like it. I just… I wish they’d give me more responsibility. Mostly, I just serve coffee and snacks. I have a business degree and I feel like I’m squandering it. That’s why I applied to LifeTech. I figured I’d finally get a chance to put my degree to good use.”

He frowned, following me into the elevator. “As a secretary?”

I shrugged. “As anything, really. Anything more than a glorified waitress, anyway.”

The elevator dinged, and the doors slid open to the garage again. Bennett fell silent, following behind me as we made our way back to my car. Unlocking it, I smiled at him over my shoulder.

“Thanks again, Bennett.”

He stepped back, his brows drawn down low as he watched me slide into my car and shut the door. His eyes darted back and forth and just before I pulled away, he knocked on my window. I rolled it down slowly, looking up at him.

“Are you still looking for a job?”

I frowned at him. “Um… Yes? Why?”

He scrubbed the back of his neck, lifting a shoulder. “I know of a position, if you wanna try for it. Luka’s got a say in it but I’d back you, if you want.”

My mouth fell open. “Seriously?”

He nodded. “Grayson needs a new secretary. Last one was a real piece of work and he needs a lot of help. He’s working himself to death and I’m… He’s my friend. I’m worried about him.”

Biting my lip, I fought back a smile. He was so sweet about it, I didn’t doubt him for a second.

“I’d love to apply. I’ll look up the application online when I get home and–”

“No!”

His intense response surprised me, and I jumped. He grimaced, shaking his head.

“Sorry. Don’t apply online. It’d go through HR and they’re assholes. Can you come in for an interview tomorrow?”

Nodding slowly, I pushed past the surprise and forced out a smile. “Um, sure. Is noon okay? I’ll have to take a long lunch.”

“Noon’s fine. Gimme your phone. I’ll give you my number and you can text me when you’re on your way.”

I did as I was told, handing him my phone. While he plugged in his number, I tried not to get my hopes up. This meeting almost felt like kismet. I’ve wanted to work for LifeTech for years and the guy who helped me carry my things upstairs just happened to work in that same building and was willing to put me up for a job? That screamed serendipity. But Alan tried to put me up for a job once and nothing came of it, so I didn’t want to put all my eggs in one basket. I’d need a really good excuse for a long lunch tomorrow to make sure my boss never found out. I wasn’t going to lose my job for something that wasn’t a sure thing. Bennett said interview, not that he was handing me a job.

Passing me back my phone, Bennett gave me his first real smile. It was small, but his eyes warmed and his lips tipped up and butterflies exploded in my stomach. He really was handsome. If I wasn’t happily in a relationship, I’d probably be tripping over my tongue around him.

“See you tomorrow, Julie.”

I beamed, wiggling my fingers at him. “See you tomorrow, Bennett. Thanks again!”

He took a few steps back, watching me pull out of the space with his hands in his pockets. Here’s hoping he wasn’t the kind of guy who would just string me along. He already knew I had a boyfriend. This wasn’t just to get into my pants. He was too sweet for that. Right?
