Johnny dove for her, then howled when he got too close.

“Oh, I forgot to mention, there’s a kickback on that thing—a radius of a few feet. The collar is made of pure silver, enhanced by witch magic, and sends off something like a poison that is quite nasty for werewolves. It’s perfect for training, subduing. It won’t kill her, but as you can see, it definitely causes a lot of discomfort and keeps her spirit in check.”

He pressed a button again, and Charlotte cried out. Rage boiled to the surface, and I had to do everything in my power not to attack.

“Here… Try it yourself.” He held it out to me. “I’ve heard that she can be quite a raging bitch… A beast actually.” He looked pointedly at Charlotte, like they were sharing a secret.

The glare she gave him back looked like it took all her energy.

I had to get her out of here.

“Kane, that’s enough.” Johnny hovered over her, clearly torn between heeding my command and protecting her. “Make it stop,” he growled.

I moved quickly—so quickly that Sal and his men didn’t see me coming—and snatched the device from his hand. I didn’t like to show my strength and skills in public. I didn’t want to give a hint of the range of my abilities, but the situation was out of control.

Before Sal could blink, I crushed the device in my palm. Charlotte collapsed on the ground with a pitiful sigh.

Sal stood up, his shock verging on rage.

“Guess I was too rough. My bad.” I dumped the remains of the device on his desk. “Our deal is complete. You’ve been paid in full.”

Johnny ripped the collar from Charlotte’s throat, roaring as his hand sizzled. Magic or not, silver was toxic to werewolves. Then he swooped her up into his arms, his expression hard, daring anyone to challenge him. She was a limp noodle, all fight gone as her eyes rolled to the back of her head.

“I don’t want to ever see her again.” Sal waved to the door. “She’s your problem now, Kane, and you’re going to want to keep her subdued somehow. Trust me on that.”

“You got your money.” I turned my back on him, sending a message of dismissal that I knew would rile him. “She’s mine now.”

And he had no idea what I had planned for her.

But he would. Soon enough, he would.
