DOMINIC

My eyes slowly opened as I struggled to focus on my surroundings. Everything was a blurry mess. The ground felt cold as I pressed my hand against it and moved it around, my fingers pressing into the dips and texture. Tile. I was on a tiled floor. Looking up, I recognized the hazy doorway. I was in my house.

What the hell happened?I struggled to remember anything.

Pushing my body up into a sitting position, I scooted back until I hit the wall and relaxed against it. I glanced around once my vision returned. Michael was a short distance away, still passed out. At least, I hoped he was only asleep and not actually dead.

I didn’t have the energy to check; my body wasn’t ready to move willingly. And thankfully, I didn’t have to because he started moaning soon after.

“Are we in your house?” he mumbled.

“Apparently,” I said, but talking hurt. Moving hurt. Everything fucking hurt.

“How’d we get here?” he asked as I grabbed my aching head.

“I have no idea,” I responded, but my voice was scratchy.

“Were we drugged?” Michael asked.

The thought had crossed my mind. This wasn’t just getting knocked out cold by a sucker punch. My head spun like something foreign had entered my body and it was fighting to get it out.

“It’s possible.” I fingered the sides of my neck, feeling for any kind of puncture wound.

Dove and I had been obsessed with the showDexterwhen it first came out, and we’d watched every episode twice. Knocking someone out with a ketamine-filled needle to the neck seemed easy enough, and no one ever saw it coming.

My neck felt sore to the touch, but I wasn’t sure if it was my imagination or not. I needed a mirror. Or the camera on my cell. Desperately searching for my phone, I breathed out in relief when I found it still in my pocket, where I’d put it earlier. I pulled it out and opened the Camera app. Turning my head to the side, I snapped a picture before enlarging it.

I noticed multiple markings that hadn’t been there before, but I assumed those were from the fight. I’d clearly been choked. My neck was bruised, and what looked like finger marks dotted the sides underneath my jaw.

“Maybe we really were drugged. After being choked unconscious,” I said out loud.

Would Trevor have really gone to such lengths to ensure that I wouldn’t screw things up? It seemed extreme. And not to mention, a little psychotic.

Blowing out a quick breath, I tried to stand up. My legs didn’t want to cooperate, and I slammed my palms against the wall to stop myself from falling. This was ridiculous. My stomach recoiled from the movements, and I vomited all over the floor.

“Fuck,” I said after wiping my mouth with my hand and reaching for the handle on the front door.

“Where are you going?” Michael asked, his body still in the fetal position, facing me.

“I want to see if my car’s here or not.”

The door opened, and I braced for sunlight, but I was met with the setting sun.How long have we been out?My car was sitting in the driveway, perfectly parked. So, not only had we been rendered unconscious and taken from the church, but we’d also been drivenin my carand dropped offinside my home. Looking down, I spotted the keys sitting on the floor. Thank God I hadn’t thrown up on them.

“Is it there?”

“Yeah.”

“Is my truck still here?”

“Right where you left it,” I said after noticing it was still parked at the curb. It looked untouched.

“They know what kind of car you drive and where you live. Think they’ll be back?”

“Nah,” I said. I honestly wasn’t worried about that. There was nothing here that they needed, or they would have already taken it while we were knocked out. “I’m sure Trevor gave them detailed instructions. Especially if we were the whole reason those guys were at the church in the first place.”

It seemed logical. If Trevor’s intention was to keep me out, then the guards had literally one job. And that job was completed. No matter how much it pissed me off.

“Makes sense, I guess,” Michael groaned and rolled over. “He didn’t want you to stop the wedding, so he made sure you couldn’t.”
