Page 36 of Don’t Marry Him

“Mommy.” Willow was right behind Dominic, on his heels.

I should have known. She followed him everywhere. Any other girl would have made me jealous, but not this one. The way she loved him only made me love him more.

“Hey, baby girl. How’s the bouncy house?” I asked, moving her sweat-filled hair out of her face and tucking the strands behind her ears.

“I want Pops to jump with me.” She reached for my dad’s hand, and he gave me a concerned look.

“I’m not sure bouncy houses are good for Pops,” I tried to explain before leaning down closer to her. I whispered loud enough for everyone around us to hear, “He might break a leg or something.”

Her dark eyes grew super wide. “Really?” She dropped his hand. “I don’t want you to break a leg, Pops,” she said before whipping her head toward Jacobi. “Uncle Jobi, I bet you won’t break anything. Come jump with me!”

Jacobi reached down and started untying his laces. “Race you,” he said before Willow took off running toward the house, her giggle echoing in the air. Jacobi was hot on her track.

“I think you’ve lost him,” I said to Kristina, knowing that anytime he was around Willow, she stole all of his attention.

“You’re going to have to give him one of your own,” Dominic added with a grin.

Kristina swatted his shoulder. “We’re not even married yet. Or engaged. Tell him to hurry up and ask already.”

She pouted, and I knew in that moment that Dominic would talk to Jacobi, and we’d have a wedding to attend sooner rather than later. My man was good that way.

“Baby,” Dominic said in my ear before squeezing my hand, reminding me that we apparently needed to talk.

“I guess we’ll be right back,” I said, excusing myself from everyone as they rolled their eyes, most likely assuming that he and I were sneaking off to make out somewhere. I couldn’t really blame them, considering the fact that we did just that more often than not during parties.

My husband held on to my hand and pulled me inside our house and upstairs to our bedroom, where he closed the door behind us.

“You’re scaring me,” I blurted out as soon as we stopped moving.

“I just got some news. It couldn’t wait,” he said, holding up his cell phone.

My throat constricted. “What is it?” I couldn’t even begin to process what this might be about.

The Firenzis were in prison and would spend the rest of their lives there. As far as I knew, we weren’t blamed for their takedown, not even Dominic’s father, so no one was out to get us.

“Trevor,” Dominic said.

That one word made my world spin and threw me back in time so quickly that I thought I might lose my balance.

“Is he here?”

I knew how badly Dominic had wanted to seek him out and make him pay for what he’d done to me at first. But the more time that passed, chasing him down and getting revenge seemed less and less important. And once we found out I was pregnant with Willow, everything changed.

Trevor was no longer a priority in our life. Revenge seemed almost pointless. Protecting me and Willow became Dominic’s only goal. He was going to be a dad, and he didn’t take that responsibility lightly. We had a long conversation about it all one night, where I not only gave him permission, but also downright insisted that he let the vendetta against Trevor go. It wasn’t worth it.

Not anymore.

And plus, we’d won. Dominic and I had gotten married and pregnant, and we were completely in love.

Trevor hadn’t even been a blip on our radar. Not when we had something more important growing inside of me.

Dominic held me in his arms and led me to the bed, where we both sat down. “He’s dead.”

I hadn’t expected that. “He’s dead?” I repeated. “How?”

“Apparently, he pissed off the wrong people. He got knifed in a bar last night. Didn’t make it through surgery.”

“How’d you find out?”
