“We’re not going to leave you. No one is going to kill us,” Seth said.

“Not even, Jim White,” Will assured her.

But the man had an army of men, including hired guns. Now more than ever, Seth knew he needed to telegraph for help.

Seth

The next morning, he and Will tossed a coin to see who would go into town and leave the other one alone to comfort their new wife. When Seth won the coin toss, it didn’t feel like winning. It felt like he was losing by being forced to go into town.

Last night, their sleep had not been interrupted by marauders, but rather their bride. They had fucked long into the night, satisfying their woman and keeping her from crying over Garza.

Now this morning, Seth was riding his mare into town while Will was at home fucking Lily and watching over the place.

As he rode into the town of Blessing, he couldn’t help thinking the small frontier town was the perfect place for a gunslinger to take out a bank. Maybe he should talk to the banker once again, since he now had new information.

When he pulled up in front of the sheriff’s office, he thought he heard shouting. He threw his leg over his saddle and dropped to the ground. Slowly he walked toward the sheriff’s office and the voices rose in anger.

Opening the door, he saw two men standing before the sheriff, frowns on their faces. “Outside, mister,” one of the men said, holding up his hand.

“No, these gentlemen were just leaving,” the sheriff said.

“I can come back,” Seth said.

“No,” the portly man said standing behind his desk. “We’re done.”

The two men glowered at the man with a badge on his chest. “We’ll be back.”

“We’re done and you can tell your boss that,” the sheriff said, his hand hovering next to his gun belt.

Who was their boss?

The cowboys looked more like gunslingers as they walked by Seth. Suddenly the first one stopped and turned back to glare at Seth.

“Texas Ranger?”

Seth faced him. “Yes.”

“Your partner married that girl on the Sweet B Ranch?”

“Yes,” Seth said. He hated that he couldn’t admit that she was his wife too.

The man walked right up to Seth and stared him in the eye. “Sell the ranch. Mr. White has been wanting that property for a long time.”

Seth smiled at the man, his hand close to his gun. “What’s your name? I want to put a name to your face, so that the next time you harass my partner and his bride, I can arrest you.”

“Blackball Johnson,” the man said. “Don’t worry, Ranger, you’re not going to live long enough to arrest me.”

“Oh, even better, I can kill you,” Seth said his fingers on his gun.

The men were gunslingers. Hired guns from the Big W Ranch.

“Get the hell out of my office, before I arrest you. And you tell Jim White, I said not no, but hell no,” the sheriff said, his gun pulled and pointed at the men.

The man grinned and walked out the door. Though the sheriff was throwing them out, he got the feeling it was because Jim asked him to do something illegal.

When someone paid you money, they owned you.
