Me: you are most welcome *kissy face emoji*besides who doesn’t like to smell like fresh fruit. I think the scent will suit you well.
I could imagine his annoyed face right now.
Nate: How is grocery shopping?
Me: It’s going fabulous except for the part where my best friend has turned into a bridezilla over this whole thing. I don’t know what to do or say because I feel like the slightest thing could tick her off, and I'm not trying to end up on her wrong side.
Selena could be intimidating when she wanted to be. And I didn’t want to face the hurricane storm she became when you wound up on her bad side.
Nate: It’s her first home. It’s a big moment for her. It’s a given that she would want her housewarming to go well. Also, given that this is Selena, she is prone to over-dramatic tendencies.
This was true too.
Me: Are you coming tonight?
Nate: Of course. I want to see you in that red dress you tried on for me the other day. I can’t have other men ogling what’s mine.
A flutter moved within my chest. He always knew how to get me feeling flustered. Images of that night filled my mind. The way he had made me watch him undress me in the mirror. And after that, he then proceeded to pleasure me with his mouth as I sat at his dining table. I had been so shocked that it had managed to withstand the sheer force we had exerted on that thing.
“Earth to my best friend!” A packet of Doritos hit my head and took me from my thoughts. “Are you done having phone sex now?”
I blushed, “Phone sex? Who said I’m having phone sex?”
Selena stood beside the cart with Doritos in her hands and an annoyed expression.
“Your face. You’re making that come and take me face you make when you’re flirting with someone.” Her eyes flicked back up to meet mine. “I know you’ve been having sex with Nate. Don’t bother lying to me because that would only be an insult to our friendships and my intelligence.”
Shame washed over me at the fact that I had been caught red-handed. I had planned to break the news to her differently.
“I’m sorry, Lena.”
She waved me off. “I’m not mad at you, Lia. Besides, you suck at hiding your I’ve just had sex face, and you also have been extremely chipper lately. It wasn’t hard to put two and two together. Also, I saw you sneak out of his apartment when I met you for coffee that day.”
“What?” I had thought I was being so discreet.
“You suck at sneaking out, by the way. Everyone knows you need to do it under the cover of darkness. Rookie mistake,” she teased me.
She analyzed my face for a few seconds.
“Brothers? Lia?”
I bit down on my lip. “I like him, Lena. It just feels exciting with him.”
“Exciting or dangerous?”
“Both?
She shook her head, looking at me how a parent would look at their child when they were worried for them. I knew what she was going to say before she even said it. That’s how in tune we were with each other.
“Amelia,” she began, and I prepared myself for what would come. “You just left one dusty Cane brother. Do you want to get involved with another? I don’t want to ruin your fun or whatever you two are doing. But I can’t sit back and watch you break again like you did with Jacob. Because Jacob is child’s play compared to the damage Nate would do to you. I don’t want to watch your heart shatter like that again.”
“I’m not going to fall in love, Lena.”
Her eyes softened, and she rounded the cart to where I stood. “Your heart is prone to love. You don’t have room for detached things because they don’t serve you in any way, shape, or form. And guarding your heart is like asking you to shut off pieces of yourself. The thing with you, Lia, is you love without caution. It doesn’t matter to you how badly the person has wounded you or how deep they drove the knife. You would still find a way to love them.”
Every point she made was like a slap to the face.
