“When I was with Jacob. You hated me, or at least I thought you did. You never said it in so many words, but your actions spoke volumes.” He hummed in answer, and I was too scared to look back to see his face. “So why?”

“I never hated you…” he said in a sleepy voice fighting back another yawn. “I hated myself for what I did to you and…”

I waited, with bated breath, “…and?”

“My mom.”

That didn’t make any sense. What had he done to me and his mother that made him hate himself? Nate’s mom passed away when I was about six years old. I didn’t even know Jacob back then. I met him a year later when I transferred schools after my accident.

I turned in his arms to look into his eyes, but my mouth slammed shut when I saw his eyes closed and felt his heavy and low breathing.

He was asleep. He was utterly knocked out.

I couldn’t help but smile at how his long lashes kissed his cheekbones, and his brown hair flopped over his forehead.

I wanted to know what he meant by his comment, but I also knew he would likely not remember it come morning. So, like most things when it came to him, I pushed it down and hoped it didn’t bubble back up after some time.

AMELIA

I loved many things in this world, but waking up next to Nate had to be one of my favorites. This time he had taken me into his apartment.

All the other times we had had sex, he always came over to mine. I knew how he was about his space, so the fact that he took that step with me was huge.

Last night he had been so perfect in every way.

Now, I stood in the crisp morning air taking pictures of Amber, my new client, for her maternity shoot. She was glowing from the life she had created inside her. We decided to come to the park to get some nature shots without having to leave the city for it.

I had to be up at the crack of dawn to get the lighting I needed. And it had been even more difficult to leave because the man who had his arms around me was far too comfortable.

“So stunning, Amber,” I beamed at her.

She smiled back, rubbing her belly. “Thank you, Amelia.”

Her husband stood off the side, looking at his wife with awe. Mike was a saint, to the least. He had been doting on her the entire time.

“I think we got it.” I looked down at the small screen of my camera and saw the shots I had taken so far. She looked stunning.

She wore a long white maternity dress that flowed to the floor. With the gentle breeze that had been picking up here and there, the skirt had lifted just the slightest bit, giving it this ethereal look. Her blonde hair even had a flower crown in it.

“You’re smiling,” she gushed, waddling over to me. “Are they good?”

“You are stunning, Amber.” I showed her the camera and waited for her reaction.

Her blue eyes brightened, and her smile widened. “Oh, my goodness. You made me so pretty. I love them.”

“No,” I said. “That’s all you.”

Her husband came up behind her and kissed her temple warmly before placing an oversized coat over her petite frame. “She truly is a stunner.”

His eyes watched her with so much love swimming in them. The moment felt so intimate that I felt like I was intruding on something special between the two.

“I will have these in for you in three days.”

Tears brimmed the mommy-to-be’s eyes. “Of course. And I’m so sorry for being like this. I’m just so…hormonal.”

“You’re good.”
