From how this man behaved, you would not think he ran into burning buildings for a living. He acted more like a frat boy than an actual firefighter.

I walked over to the front counter to place my order. But as I approached, I heard the one voice I didn’t want to hear.

“With some cold foam on the top, please.” Why did she have to sound so damn chipper in the morning? It was six in the morning. “No, you can keep the change. Have a great day.”

Amelia turned to leave the register but came face to face with me again.

Why did I always seem to have the misfortune of bumping into her?

“Oh, Nate.”

I ground my teeth. “Don’t call me that.”

No one except for my family and close friends called me Nate. To others, I was Cane or Nathaniel. And I rarely answered Nathaniel either way.

“Well, aren’t you just a ray of sunshine so early in the morning.” The sarcasm oozed into her tone.

I huffed and went to move past her. I heard her mutter something under her breath, but I didn’t bother turning back to question her. The less interaction with her I had, the better for me.

I placed my order and then went to wait for our coffees, but I stopped short when I noticed Xander with none other than the woman I wanted to stay as far away from as possible.

I ground my teeth together with the annoyance building in my body.

As I neared them, I watched Xander’s eyes twinkle with glee. He wanted her, which only added to my annoyance.

“Oh, really, and how would you figure that?” Amelia laughed.

Her laugh did something to my insides. I couldn’t quite explain the feeling, but it was intrusive and caught me off guard.

Xander proceeded to say something else, making her laugh.

What the hell was so funny?

I cleared my throat and settled into the seat next to Xander. I didn’t pay her attention. I pretended she didn’t even exist in my eyes.

Childish? Maybe. But who the hell cared? She had walked into my city without warning. She was the one in the wrong here.

“Nate, let me introduce you to the lovely—”

“I know who she is,” I interrupted him, ignoring her. “Our orders should be ready.”

In my peripheral, I could see the frown come over her face.

“How do you two know each other?” He looked between us. “Did you two used to bump nasties?”

“Not in this lifetime or the next.” It was Amelia who answered quickly.

I cocked an eyebrow, “And why is that?”

“You just aren’t my cup of tea, to put it in nice terms. And besides, I think having sex with you would be like having sex with a cardboard box. You have zero expression or passion. I can’t do that.”

My frown deepened.

“But me, on the other hand,” Xander drawled. “I might as well be Italian. I am the perfect lover, if you didn’t know.”

Amelia giggled, which annoyed me.

“What would my brother think if he saw you shamelessly flirting with other men? Never pegged you as a cheater.”
