“Do not laugh!” I call out. “They’re cute but really, deep down, they’re evil!”

Just as I say it, the gray one bounds past me again, and I trip over the hose, falling right on my ass in the mud. The big brown dog woofs happily and then pounces, licking at my face.

“Help!” I squeal and laugh, trying to get the big oaf off of me, but he’s determined to kill me with kisses.

Suddenly he’s wrenched off, and I see Tomas looming over me.

“Hey there, neighbor.”

He looks smug, and I roll my eyes.

“Are you going to help me up, or just mock me as I lie in this mud?”

He cocks his head and then shrugs. “It is a good look on you. Kind of like a pig.”

I fling my hand up and splatter him with dirt. He glances down at his white shirt now speckled with mud and smirks at me.

“You’re not convincing me to help you.”

Just then, the gray dog bounds past us, spraying us both with water. Tomas gasps and a giggle works its way up my throat.

“Ha! That’s what you get for mocking me! Good boy, Wonton!”

“That’s Peanut.”

“I cannot,” I say and then fling more mud at him. “Oinking oinkers,” I say as he glowers down at me and then reaches his hand out. I grab on to it and he helps me up, his glower morphing into a wide smile when he sees the mess I’ve made.

“You thought to wash all three dogs at the same time?” he asks when I wave my hand around at the dogs that are running wild. They’ve certainly got the zoomies.

“The movies make it look romantic!” I protest and he guffaws loudly.

“Yeah, okay. The movies are wrong. Let me help you.”

“I thought you were at work,” I reply as he rounds up the smallest dog far too easily.

“I was and got off early. Come here, Nibblet.”

“Ah, so that’s the little shit’s name?” I ask, and Tomas chuckles, helping me wash Nibblet, who annoyingly obeys him. He lets Tomas wash and rinse him before shaking his small body all over me.

I sigh, realizing that there’s nothing to be done about it now. I’m a complete mess.

Tomas helps me wash Wonton and Peanut, and then helps me round them up to dry them off. It’s a useless task, Peanut rolling in the grass right after and Wonton making off with the towel.

Well, at least I tried.

I pull my shirt from my chest with an audible pop. “I need a shower. Badly.”

Tomas glances at me and then down at himself. “We both do.”

My mind immediately goes to the two of us showering together before I push that treacherous thought away. No way in hell is that man getting in a shower with me.

Absolutely disgusting. Filthy. Delicious.

“Well, thank you for your assistance with the matter at hand. I swear I’m not normally this helpless, but these damn dogs and the country are gonna do me in. I already have a gray hair and I’ve only been here a day.”

Tomas chuckles at that and then nods back to his house. “I’m gonna go get changed and then do you want to maybe hang out?”

His question surprises me, not expecting him to want to spend time with me two days in a row.
