No, that’s not going to happen.

I’m leaving soon, and Tomas will go about his life. A life without me in it.

And I need to be fine with that.

“So, tell me about your parents,” Tomas says, and I eye him.

“What’s there to tell?”

“I don’t know anything about you. Your childhood? Growing up with them? Your booger hallway?”

I roll my eyes and toss a piece of bread at him. It lands on his chest before falling to the ground.

“My mom was lying about that. She called me later to tell me so.”

“She did not.”

I glower at him and then take a grape and pop it into my mouth. “Nothing remotely exciting. I’m an only child. My parents are kind of conservative. My dad doesn’t know what to do with me.”

Tomas watches me intently, so I continue on. “I came out to them when I was fifteen. My mom cried, and my dad disappeared outside and didn’t talk to me about it. I mean, it could have been worse. They don’t know I’m a camboy.”

“I probably wouldn’t tell my parents either.”

“Yeah, the moms really are the exception. Carter really got lucky with them. Do you know they actually subscribe to the site?”

“Jesus,” Tomas says, and I wave my hand frantically.

“They don’t watch it. They just support their son, and now Reed.”

“Well, that’s something.”

“I mean, no judgment, right? You’re a subscriber now.”

Tomas’s cheeks flush in the afternoon sun, and I nudge him playfully.

“But anyways, yeah, I need to go visit them or at least make more of an effort to be in their lives, but it goes both ways, you know? I guess…I guess I’m okay just being distant from them. I honestly don’t miss them all that much. I found my family with Carter and Bennet and Jasper.”

“I like that.”

“Me too. I got really lucky.”

We smile at each other, and I lean my head onto his shoulder, popping another grape into my mouth and chewing. Tomas shifts next to me and his hand slides around my waist, pulling me into him a little more. I love this, being near him, inhaling his masculine scent.

“Where did you get all these tattoos? Were they planned or just random acts on drunken nights?”

“Both?”

I snort a laugh and snuggle up next to him.

“Well, they’re very sexy. I don’t have any tattoos, actually. Never really felt the need for one.”

“It’s not everyone’s cup of tea.”

Ain’t that right. I sigh, listening as the bushes rustle under the light breeze.

“You want to head back?” Tomas asks after a little while of silence.

“Sure. I probably should. I have a busy evening ahead.” I don’t go into details, but a job is a job. But then again, maybe Tomas will watch me this time.
