Page 69 of Discovering Damon

I arch an eyebrow at him. Damon’s told me about his parents. It was vague, but I know that they are oblivious to what he does for a living and they aren’t very supportive of him being out and proud. From what he’s told me, they try to stifle him.

I don’t know how anyone could look at Damon and ask him to be something different. To me, he’s perfect just the way he is.

“Will I be meeting them?” I ask, and Damon shrugs, eyeing me with mirth.

“Maybe. One day. I should go visit them soon. Not that I really want to. But if you wanted to come for moral support, I wouldn’t be opposed.”

“I’ll always support you,” I say, loving that he’s talking about the future with me. I love that we’re making plans that span the next year or more. Together.

“A drink for my favorite man,” Tabitha says as the door slides open and she hands a glass to Damon. She didn’t even bring me one, and I glower at her. It goes ignored.

“You look fabulous, by the way, and that sangria is to die for. Did you cut all the fruit up yourself?”

“Tomas helped,” Damon says and then links his arm with mine. And out of habit, I pull him into my side and kiss his temple.

It’s only when I realize what I’ve done that I freeze. Damon does too, his mouth slightly agape.

“Oh,” Tabitha says and then her lips curl up into a wide knowing smile. “Oh! Guys! Guys, get your butts out here!”

She’s bellowing now and everyone clambers out onto the deck, their eyes pinging from where Damon and I stand to where Tabitha is nearly dancing on her feet.

“You guys…you guys.”

Everyone just shoutswhat, and then she waggles her hand around in front of us.

“What Tabitha is trying to say,” I begin, but Damon stops me, his lips moving toward my ear as he whispers, “You don’t need to tell them anything you’re not ready to.”

I know that. I do, but it still comes tumbling out of me. “Damon and I are…together.”

Damon gasps and so does my family. My dad meanders out slowly and looks around.

“What happened? What did I miss?”

My mom throws her hands up in the air, cursing under her breath. “You could have not disappeared for ten seconds, you ingrate! Your son just introduced us to his boyfriend!”

My dad stares at me and then Damon and then shrugs. “Okay, but what did I miss?”

Tara begins cackling and so does Tarak, until everyone is doubled over in laughter, my dad looking so damn confused.

“What?” he keeps muttering before sitting down on his seat and closing his eyes.

The laughter settles into the afternoon sky, and I glance around at my family, all of them in various states of smiling.

“So, you’re gay then?” Tarak finally asks, a confused look on his face.

“I…um, probably bi.”

My answer lingers, and my dad sighs. “I don’t understand what the fuss is. I thought Damon and Tomas were together the last time they came over.”

My mom flings her hands into the air once more. “I cannot with this man.”

She gives me a hug and then Damon before muttering under her breath and disappearing back into the house. My sisters all give us hugs as well and Tarak pats our shoulders awkwardly.

“I…well, that went far better than it did for me,” Damon says after my siblings meander back in to grab their drinks.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, when I came out it wasn’t this fun. My mom cried and my dad disappeared outside without a word.”
