I had to be careful. I stared at the knife’s metallic glint in the hall’s dim green lights as I swept toward my cabin. I had to be careful to make sure I kept up the façade of a grateful, betrothed Earthling. It was clear that, in my heart, what was most important to me was the end point of my plan, even when it took me with it: I just had to make sure I made every step to get there went flawlessly according to plan.

And that included looking like the happy bride planning her wedding day. Even if the most spectacular events would occur just briefly after the vows.

There were a few more steps to go before we reached that point. But I had been trained for this. I knew what I was doing.

I just had to make sure no one else did.

The pout of Jasmine’s lips pulled me in as her long brown hair flowed, sheathing me in its tangles like waves of a spider’s web, only I didn’t want to shy away from the trap. I sensed something I couldn’t escape, something that would be difficult to flee from in the depths of her embrace, but a type of salvation awaited me, too.

Her tongue flicked at my lips, and I slipped a kiss in before she could pull back, tightening my embrace on her waist as she wrapped her legs around me. A giggle escaped her, making me feel like I had won something she didn’t expect to give me.

The silver flecks in her black eyes spun sparkles between us brighter than the stars outside theGloryDaze. I was afraid I would drift out without life support if I let her loose, so I gripped her tighter. The tattoos of moons and stars across my flesh, scored by countless battle scars, brushed into her soft, gentle skin. So soft.

Her eyes stayed entranced on mine as I slipped my fingers beneath her silky hair to sweep it aside and set my lips to her skin.

Her moan swept through my entire body, lighting me on fire and making my fangs grow.

Krafina fangs extended only under the most profound emotions, and I had no idea what the poison might do to her. Would she risk death to feel the pleasure?

Would she succumb to the pleasure of raking my teeth against her flesh?

How would a human react?

Would I risk it?

Did I care about the fate of this human?

Jasmine’s supple body curved up against my hips, and we thrashed in the bed, the world a blur, the humming lights of my Commander’s chamber flashing gold and red.

I pressed her back to the sheets, straddling her as her nipples peeked from within the weave of beautiful brown hair. My breath was hot on her neck as I laced kisses down her neckline.

She cooed in delight as her smile lit the lust of my fire. Every place on my skin she touched burned as if she was caressing an electric surge into my scales and scars. I pressed into her tighter, hungry for more.

The gold and red flashing around us grew more exigent, tearing my eyes from hers, even as the tearing of desire in my groin grew harder and my cock pulsed to know how soft she might be everywhere.

I leaned down to kiss her again as she turned her head to the side, coy and relaxed with that sweet smile, making me chase her lips—

The air was split with the sound of the klaxon, and I burst up from my covers with a groan.

Alone in my chambers, I grabbed at my throbbing head.

Throbbing from too much of that blasted wine at that foolhardy dinner with those assholes who just wanted to mock me.

I much preferred this elusive dream to the memory of their condescension and the gloating of my father.

I looked around my chambers at the glowing gold and red warning lights and thumbed the keypad at my headboard to turn off the morning alarm.

“Damnit.”

I rubbed my eyes and ran my tongue over the pointed tips of my fangs. I took three deep breaths, willing them to retreat to regular length and pressuring my heart to return to a normal beat, even as the tender touch of Jasmine’s fingertips faded from the burning memory on my skin.

I growled and threw back the sweaty sheets. I experienced a flash of sincere disappointment that surprised me. It had been a long time since someone else’s sweat stained my sheets with me. A Commander’s life was lonely. And now, this human woman was suddenly plaguing my waking moments and even my dreams.

“Why am I dreaming of her so often?” I tensed my feet on the floor, trying to force myself to wake up to the reality of the world around me.
