“That’s how I was leaning.” He shifted toward his laptop and powered it down.

“When will you go?”

“I’d like to leave now, but an overnight trip would be out-of-pattern and raise more questions with Nan. I’ll probably head out early tomorrow.”

“How will you explain the trip?”

“If I take off early enough, I can leave a note and just say there was a break in one of my investigations. That won’t be a lie, and Nan will assume I’m somewhere in town. I don’t like being four hours away in case a medical emergency arises, but there’s not much I can do about that.”

Several beats ticked by. “If it would ease your mind, you could call me if you hear from her. I’d be happy to step in and help. Unless you don’t want her to start asking questions about us.”

He swallowed past the lump that rose in his throat at her kindness. “She’s already asking questions. I can handle a few more. Thank you for that offer.”

“After all you’ve done for me in recent days, this is the least I can do.” Her tone softened. “I hope the trip gives you the answers you’ve been searching for, Marc.”

“I do too. I’ll call you tomorrow after my visit.”

“I’ll be waiting. Drive safe.”

They said their goodbyes, and Marc stood, snagged his coat off the stand in the corner, picked up his laptop—and quashed the nudge from his conscience about keeping the trip a secret from Nan.

Yes, it was a deviation from his usual honest and straightforward approach with her, but why open old wounds when this could end up producing nothing?

If the man did have pertinent information to offer, however, the situation would become more complicated. He’d have to weigh the pros and cons of how much of it to share, perhaps tap into Bri’s sound thinking again.

But for tonight, he’d eat dinner with Nan, celebrate the end of her radiation, and hope whatever he found tomorrow would lead to closure on the most difficult chapter in his life.

TRAVIS’S CAR WASIN IDAHO.

And since he hadn’t shown up in any of the airline or rental car company databases, odds were he wasn’t behind her run of bad luck.

Bri exhaled.

“Thanks for connecting with the McCall police, Jack.” She shoved aside the remains of her nuked dinner and booted up her laptop. “That’s one less worry on my plate.”

“What else is eating at you—pardon the food pun.”

“The Kavanaugh puzzle, for one thing. I’m about to have another go at the autopsy reports.”

“You have any new leads?”

“I wish.”

“If nothing’s happening, why are you working the case on a Friday night?”

“Because the time I put into it now is on my own dime.”

“Your boss wants you to shut the investigation down?”

“Officially.”

“If neither you or your ATF buddy have been able to find anything to back up your suspicions, maybe there’s nothing to be found.”

“That was Sarge’s conclusion too.” She opened the medical examiner’s report on Michelle Thomas. “He could be right.”

“But you’re not giving up.”

Jack knew her well.
