And what difference would it make if he did? There was no question that was his intent, either now or later. And barring divine intervention, there was no chance she’d be able to stop him. He had a gun and strength on his side, and she—

Stop that, Bri Tucker! Pull yourself togetherand stand up! You’re not a quitter. Give yourbrain a few minutes to recalibrate. This isn’t overtill it’s over.

Hard as she tried to smother that insistent voice, it continued to loop through her mind.

Fine. She’d soldier on as long as she could.

Wincing, she rolled to her side, heaved herself onto her knees, and stood. Swayed as she swiped at the blood flowing from her nose.

A blurry Travis glared at her. “I’m not falling for any more tricks. Walk.”

Not easy to do when your leg throbbed, pain reverberated through your face with every step, and blood dripped down your chin.

But she put one foot in front of the other and continued down the path.

Thinking.

Trying to come up with a way out of this mess.

Praying.

Because she wasn’t ready to die. Not even close. Not after surviving a failed parachute. Not after the surgeries she’d endured and the countless hours of excruciating PT she’d sufferedthrough to regain the use of her leg. Not after meeting a man who’d made her believe in the possibility of happily-ever—

“Stop. We’re here.”

Bri jerked to a halt.

A dozen yards to the left, a weathered concrete structure loomed behind a denuded tangle of branches. About fifteen feet high in the middle, flat above the rusted steel door but with sides that sloped down to the ground, it was covered with earth and vegetation. A large number was painted on the door.

It was like a set from a horror movie.

“Wh-what is this place?”

“World War II munitions bunker. Go up on the concrete platform and stand on the far right side.”

She squinted at the structure. Between the deepening dusk and the swelling in her eye, it was getting more and more difficult to see, but the large stoop-like platform in front of the building was easy to make out.

Pushing aside brambles, Bri limped toward it. Hoisted herself up and moved to the side.

Once she was at a safe distance, Travis joined her on the platform and crossed to the door.

Near as she could tell, it was bolted shut and padlocked.

How in the world would he know about this place, let alone have a key for it?

Except he didn’t. After fiddling with the lock, he detached it and swung the heavy door open. Swept his light around inside. Backed up and motioned her forward. “After you.”

He wanted her to go inside this tomb-like structure?

Her stomach revolted.

Is that where he planned to finish her off? Pull the trigger within the confines of the thick concrete that would muffle the shot, then leave her there until someday someone came across her bones?

No.

If he was going to kill her, he could do it out here.

She folded her arms. “I’m not going in there. If you’re planning to shoot me, do it here.”
