Travis’s gun lay within Alison’s grasp.

A beat ticked by, and the other woman dived for it.

Oh, God, no!

That plea, however, didn’t change the harsh reality.

She was seconds away from death.

There was no time to think. To plan. To consider other options.

So Bri did what she’d been trained to do.

She pulled the trigger.

Alison jerked back and went down on one knee.

Operating on instinct and adrenaline, Bri snatched up Travis’s gun and backed toward the door. There was another gun in here somewhere, and it was possible she could muster the strength to search for it while Alison was doubled over.

But hanging around, poking through the rubble in the hopes she’d find it before the other woman did, would be foolish.

She was out of here.

Bri continued backing toward the door. Once there, she pulled it open, slipped outside, shoved it closed, and took off down the path she’d trod earlier with Travis.

Praying Alison wouldn’t find the gun and come after her before she could get to Travis’s car, turn her phone back on, and send an SOS.

“HOLD ON.”Marc grasped Jack’s arm, jerking him to a stop. The rustle of leaves in the distance indicated someone—or something—was on the move.

“I hear it.” Jack motioned him to the side. “Find cover there. I’ll take the other side.”

Marc tucked himself beside a cedar tree that allowed him to see the path—or as much as was visible in the darkness. The light from the full moon wasn’t sufficient to be more than marginally helpful.

A pair of night vision goggles would come in handy about now.

The rustling grew louder.

Possibly a deer ... but deer tended to mosey along unless spooked. This sounded like a flat-out run, and it appeared to be coming from around the curve in the path up ahead.

Five seconds later, a dark figure barreled into view.

From the distance, it was impossible to discern features. But several things registered in the dim light.

The form appeared to be female.

She had long hair.

And despite her fast clip, she was limping.

It was Bri.

A shuddering wave of relief passed through Marc.

Whatever had happened, she was alive.

That was all that mattered.
