No problem.

Cara claimed a chair too. “I’m sure Bri has a million questions.”

Actually, she didn’t. And the ones she did have had nothing to do with the case that had monopolized her for weeks and almost cost her her life. They were much more personal than that.

But she could deal with those after her siblings left.

“I think I got most of my answers directly from the source, but I do have a piece of news I didn’t share last night. With Travis dead, it wasn’t relevant. My parachute accident wasn’t an accident. He sabotaged my chute.”

Marc’s grip on her hand tightened, and Jack almost choked on his coffee.

After hacking for a few moments, her brother swiped at his mouth with a napkin, face red. “He tried to kill you in Idaho?”

“Not according to him. He knew I had a backup chute. He claims he just wanted to scare me. Part of his retribution plan.”

“What a scumbag.”

“That’s what Alison said.”

“Now there’s a woman who’s a piece of work.” Marc stroked his thumb over the back of her hand. “I wonder how she pulled off the camping ‘accident’ with her ex?”

“We’ll find out.” Jack’s resolute tone left no doubt of that. “I do have one other development to report. A stash of souvenirs was found in Alison’s house during the search. Weassume they’re from her victims. Les Kavanaugh’s retirement gift was among them.”

“I’m glad his daughter will get that back. It will mean a lot to her.” Bri sighed, then forced up the corners of her lips. “Why don’t we chat about more pleasant topics while we eat these pastries? I, for one, would rather forget about yesterday for a little while.”

“I second that.” Cara lifted her coffee mug in agreement, selected a pastry, and kept the conversation humming for the next fifteen minutes, at which point she stood. “Jack and I should be going. I’ll call you later, Bri.”

Bri pushed herself to her feet, and Marc rose at once, giving her an assist. “Thank you both for coming. You for the long drive”—she touched Cara’s arm—“and you for suffering through a night on my couch.” Jack remained sitting, so she laid her arm on his shoulder.

“See us out?” Cara tugged Jack to his feet.

“Sure.”

“I’ll get a refill and wait for you here.” Marc picked up his mug.

After a flurry of goodbyes between him and her siblings, Bri followed her brother and sister to the door.

“I really do appreciate you guys being here when I woke up.” Bri leaned back against the wall as Jack opened her front door. Any support at this stage was welcome for her aching hip and knee.

“One for all, all for one.” Cara leaned close and gave her a gentle hug. “I like your guy.” She whispered the comment in Bri’s ear.

Bri returned the squeeze. “Me too.”

As Cara backed off, Jack moved in, kissed her uninjured cheek, and echoed Cara’s sentiment. “For the record, Davis seems like an okay guy.”

“I’m glad you approve.”

“But don’t rush into anything.”

She gave a mock salute. “I’ll keep that in mind.”

“And go sit down before you fall down.”

Based on Cara’s nod of agreement, they’d both deduced the reason she was holding up the wall. Or vice versa.

“Next on my agenda.”

After they filed through the door, Bri waved them off and returned to the kitchen.
