Her face lit up. The change was remarkable. She'd had her guard up just a few seconds ago. I made myself a silent promise never to give her reasons to doubt my intent again. She didn't deserve it, and I didn’t want it.

"So, just to make it clear, you want me to sleep in your bed or do sexy stuff?"

"I love it when you're babbling," I said.

"Oh, trust me, this isn't babbling. This is just me sharing with you every single thought in my head.”

"What do you want to do?" I asked her. I didn’t want her uncomfortable. From now on, my place was hers.

"Hm, let's share secrets."

"That sounds... random."

"I know, but it's not. I just can't explain my train of thought in a way that makes sense to you. You'd have to be in my head for that."

I laughed, liking how easy it was to be around her. “Challenge accepted.”

“You go first.”

Lying on my back, palms under my head, I swallowed hard. I had a feeling this was more about putting her at ease, but I’d do whatever she needed to do to get there.

“I’m afraid of clowns.”

She threw her head back, laughing. “Who isn’t? The makeup is damn creepy. I hate the dark.”

This was turning out to be fun. “Not exactly a fear, but... I also don’t like seeing the people I care about suffer.”

Her eyes softened. “Of course you don’t.” She turned on her belly, fiddling with her feet before adding, “I’m afraid I won’t be able to truly be vulnerable with anyone. Even you.”

I leaned into her, touching the tip of her nose with mine.

“I disagree. You’re more open than you know. And I can definitely work with you on that.”

“I’m not scaring you away?”

“No way in hell. Quite the contrary. I want to know everything going on in that brilliant mind of yours.” Kimberly Maxwell was the most amazing woman I’d met. Knowing her fears was a privilege.

She smiled. “Think you can get in my head, huh?”

I wiggled my eyebrows. “I’d love to try.”
