Holy shit! It was in Airplane Mode. How did I manage that?
I was suddenly giddy, and I took it off Airplane Mode, but in my excitement, I tapped it twice and managed to activate it again.
Ah, get a grip on yourself, Zoey. He just messaged you. And chances are it's work related.
But I didn't think it was, because he could have just emailed me.
When I finally managed to take it off Airplane Mode, I waited for a few seconds until I had both internet and a phone signal, then realized I had four unread messages from him. I was in seventh heaven right now. I hadn't even realized how much I'd been hoping he would write to me until this very moment.
He'd sent the first message early in the morning.Damn it. I'd had it on Airplane Mode all this time?
Colton: Hey, I've got a last-minute meeting crammed into my schedule for the whole week. I’ll only be at the office on Friday. I want to see you. Are you free in the evening?
The next one was an hour later.
Colton: Are you free Friday evening?
Colton: I've got a surprise for you for lunch on Friday. Let me know when you get this.
And just a few minutes ago, he sent me a question mark.
In my haste to reply to the messages, I dropped the phone in my lap.Oh, if my brothers could see me now, they’d make fun of me forever.Taking a deep breath, I typed.
Zoey: What kind of surprise?
I sent it quickly and then realized he’d also asked about the evening. I did want to see Colton, but my friend Tom and I had scheduled drinks on Friday a while back, and I knew he was looking forward to it. It had been a while since we managed to catch up because he was super busy. I couldn't wait to see what was going on in his life.
Zoey: I already have plans for dinner on Friday.
Then I got an idea and typed again.
Zoey: But maybe we can meet after? I'm not sure how long it'll take, though.
Colton replied a few seconds later. This was so exciting. I'd forgotten what it felt like to flirt... especially when it was forbidden.
Where did that thought come from? Nothing about this was forbidden. We were two adults who... well... I didn't know what we were doing, but I was thoroughly enjoying myself.
Colton: Let me know when you finish, and if it's not too late, then we can still meet up. As for lunch, I've made reservations at a Greek restaurant in the area. I'll send you the details.
I smiled, putting the phone to my chest.
Wait. He'd never mentioned that he was going to join me. I was confused now.
Zoey: So you're taking a break on Friday for lunch and joining me?
Colton: No, it's just for you. I'd originally planned to join you, but you can enjoy it even without me.

The rest of the weekflew by. Things were strange at the office without Colton. I couldn’t explain why, but it felt like a different place altogether. He and I texted back and forth every day, and I tried to keep the flirting to a minimum.
I failed.
On Friday, right before lunchtime, I realized I had no idea where the reservation was.
Zoey: Send me the address of the restaurant and I'll go eat for two.
I wasn't even joking.
