He frowned. "What do you mean?"

"Colton, this was ten thousand dollars."

"I don't understand. What's the problem?"

"I didn't know it was that expensive."

"What difference does it make? I saw it and knew you'd love it. That's why I bought it. I didn't even think twice."

"You dropped that much money on an impulse purchase?” I double-checked.

"Yes."

For the first time since Colton and I started going out, I realized we had wildly different concepts of money. Even now, he was looking at me as if he couldn't possibly understand what the issue was.

"Colton, I'm not used to expensive gifts. I really appreciate it, but I can't accept it. I wouldn't have accepted it if I knew how much it costs.”

He touched my jaw with his fingertips. "Zoey, I would have bought this if it was seventy dollars, or seven hundred, or whatever. It doesn't matter to me. All that matters is it's something you like and makes you happy."

"Colton, the things you say..."

"And I mean every word. I love you, Zoey, and I want to give you things you enjoy."

I grinned, put my hands on his shoulders, and then jumped him. Several seconds later, I heard the unmistakable ripping sound of fabric. He laughed, grabbing me by the ass and bringing me to the nearest table.

"That was my very enthusiastic 'I love you,'" I informed him. "Can’t believe I ripped my dress apart. There's something about this lab."

Colton kissed me, hard, mirroring my desperation. When he deepened the kiss, I parted my legs, shifting to the edge of the table. The dress ripped even more, but I was too lost in Colton to care. Feeling his lips on my mouth and his hands on my body overwhelmed me in a way it never had before. We’d done far more wicked things, but this felt different. More intimate.

Groaning, he stopped the kiss.

"Let's get out of here," Colton said.

"But didn't you say you have to stay until late?"

"I’d probably have to sleep here to figure out why this formula isn't working, but I don't want to. I want to spend the night with you. The lab will still be here tomorrow. The work will be waiting for me."

"How scandalous. I'm keeping you away from work," I teased.

“Before, I would never have even thought about leaving the lab when I was at this point in the process, but you're changing me."

I smiled. “That makes me really happy.” Things were changing for me too. Before Colton, I'd never thought about how my life might look in ten or fifteen years, especially not with a guy. But with Colton, I could see us years from now.

Maybe I’d come in here, trying to drag him home one day so we could spoil the two or three kids we’d have.

Where did that thought come from?It was a scary one. I'd always been happy with what I had, but I was now suddenly dreaming about having more.

And it had all begun with a kiss and a ripped skirt.
