The entire table was quiet, waiting for my answer, and I knew that I was fucked when I said, “I gotta check on some…stuff later today.” I felt like my chest was tightening with the weight of everything that was wrong with this situation. “But I’ll see you at the party tonight.”

That seemed to appease her. “Sounds like a plan.”

Just then, Dillon reached out, then ran his hand up the outside of Valerie’s thigh. “Tell me that you’re showing up to the party single tonight, sweetheart.”

Valerie shot him a coy look. “A girl really ought to leave her options open.”

Dillon shot her a wink. “Wear a skirt.”

With that, the girls laughed, then waved at us before they went about their business. It was regular high school flirty bullshit, but I was just not in the mood right now.

“Have you lost your fucking mind?” Samuel hissed. “Yuki Makor is hot, and she ain’t saving it for marriage, Finley.”

“Seriously,” Cory agreed. “You couldn’t carve out ten minutes during last break to get your dick wet?”

“I’ve had her before,” I said, and I winced at how that sounded. Normally, I didn’t kiss and tell because that was douchebag shit, but I could admit to feeling a bit…unsettled.

“Hell, so have I,” Cross Ferguson remarked, finally chiming in. “And I know for a fact that she rides dick like she’s addicted to it.” He shook his head. “What the hell, Lars? No one in their right mind turns that girl down.”

“Maybe he’s holding out for Lindsey Vance,” Cory suggested. “If we’re talking about girls that ride dick like their addicted to it…” He let out a low whistle. “I’d take Lindsey over any of these other chicks.”

I could feel my molars grinding because this kind of bullshit talk was exactly what I was trying to avoid where Edie was concerned. I didn’t want guys talking about her like this. I didn’t want any of them to know how well or how badly Edie rode dick. I didn’t want guys comparing notes on how Edie performed in bed. While it might make me a hypocrite because I hadn’t ever put a stop to this kind of talk, things were different with Edie.

I clenched and unclenched my fist as I thought about Edie attending T.J.’s party tonight. Yeah, there was no way that I was not going to that party, and it wasn’t for pussy or free booze.

Two class periods later, and I was still upset. Though Lars had done his best to tone down his crazy this week, I couldn’t help but feel put out by his blatant hypocrisy. Yuki Makor had been practically humping his leg, but Lars hadn’t seen anything wrong with that. He hadn’t pushed her away or insisted that she act with a little more decorum. They had flirted, the whole table acting like regular, hormonal, healthy teenage kids.

It wasn’t fair.

“So, you’re going to the party, right?”

I paid for my iced tea before turning back towards Calliope. She was quickly becoming my closest friend somehow, but I didn’t mind. I was strong enough to cut her off if she became a distraction, so I wasn’t overly worried. No matter what, no friend, no guy, no person on this earth could make me throw away everything that Talon had sacrificed for me. Even if I hadn’t wanted to go into medicine, I’d still pick a profession guaranteed to make my brother proud.

“Sounds like it might be fun,” I replied rather lamely. “I mean, I’ve never been to a party before.”

“Never?” she asked skeptically.

“I never saw the point.” I shrugged a shoulder. “Besides, I was always so busy with all the stuff that I had going on, it hadn’t been worth pissing Talon off.”

“I can see that,” she murmured as she followed me to an empty table near the snack bar. “Plus, what’s the point in going if you weren’t going to be able to have a good time, right?”

I nodded. “There’s also the fact that I didn’t really need to go out to have a good time,” I told her. “There’d been plenty of nights when it’d just be us, Talon, me, Kenzlee, Alexandria, Lars, and Hunter, all of us having a good time. I don’t want to make it sound like I haven’t had any fun over the years.”

Sensing the melancholy setting in, she quickly said, “Well, this will be a different kind of fun. It’ll be a kind of fun where no one gets killed for talking to you.”

I let out a low chuckle. “I suppose that’s a plus.”

“So, while I want you to have a good time tonight, just…be careful,” she said seriously.

After taking a sip of my tea, I asked, “What do you mean?”

“There are going to be a lot of guys making their move if you go to the party tonight,” she explained. “Since we won’t be at school and the booze will be flowing, they’re bound to get brave. Especially, if Lars isn’t around or becomes…busy.”

My stomach tightened at that.
