“No,” I finally answered. “But…you know, don’t let me stop you if you want to…help yourself.”

Max flashed me a sexy smile. “I’m not into drugs,” he said. “If I plan on doing anything with baseball, then I can’t afford to fuck my body up with the hard stuff.” To prove his point, he lifted the hem of his shirt to show me his six-pack, and it was a very nice six-pack.

Before I could say anything, Max grabbed my hand, then led me to the other side of the back porch, giving us a little privacy. I could feel my heart thumping in my chest, and it was stupid how excited I felt about possibly being kissed for the first time ever. While I wasn’t sure if I was necessarily attracted to Max, he was good-looking, built, and a girl could do a lot worse for her first kiss.

When we got to the side of the house, Max maneuvered us until my back was resting against one of the awning’s support beams. I didn’t say anything as he took a drink of his beer, and the inexperienced girl in me wondered about my first kiss tasting like beer. It was a stupid thought, but it had still popped into my head, nonetheless.

“So, how are you liking the party so far?” he asked conversationally.

“It’s…I’m having a good time,” I semi-lied. I mean, I could be having a great time if I didn’t feel like such a fish out of water.

“Yeah?” I nodded. “You got any plans for afterwards?”

I had to swallow, moisten my mouth before answering him. “Uh…Calliope’s supposed to drive me home, but…that’s it, I think.”

Max leaned in closer. “You’re eighteen, right?”

I nodded again. “Yeah.”

“So, how do your parents feel about your curfew?”

Before I could answer him, I heard, “You have two seconds to step away from her before someone has to call an ambulance to come get you, Halford.”

We both turned to see Lars glaring at us, steam coming out of his ears and nose.

Shit.

“Relax, Finley,” Max said, though still taking a few steps back from me. “We were just talking.”

Lars stepped his way in between us. “I can see how you werejusttalking.”

“I swear, we were just making conversation,” Max lied, and I couldn’t help but think about Lars’ coward comment again.

“Yeah? And you had to bring her back here to have a conversation?” Lars challenged.

“It’s quieter back here-”

“Did you not get the fucking memo, Halford?” Lars snapped, cutting him off. “Did you stay home from school all this week?”

“Look, Finley-”

“Tell you what?” Lars said, not interested in Max’s excuses. “Kick my ass, and then you can talk to Edie until the fucking sun comes up in the morning. However, if I kick your ass, I’m not stopping until you’re hauled out of here on a stretcher.”

“Lars, knock it off,” I snapped. “This isn’t funny anymore.”

Not turning away from Max, Lars said, “Oh, I agree. This shit is definitely not funny.”

“Look, I’m not interested in throwing fists with you, Finley-”

“Then stay the fuck away from Edie, or else that’s exactly what’s going to happen,” he shot back.

“Lars, knock it the hell off,” I bit out.

“Shut up, Edie,” he snapped, and all I saw was red.

“Fine,” Max said, finally throwing up his hands in mock surrender. “She’s all yours.”

I watched as Max walked away, and I couldn’t remember a time when I’d felt so goddamn angry at someone. Lars just ruined my chances at a first kiss, and I waspissed.
