I blinked at him, and then I laughed my ass off.

“Ms. Draven, do you mind?” Mrs. Joiner huffed.

Getting myself under control, I apologized. “Sorry, Mrs. Joiner. It won’t happen again.”

As soon as she went back to grading papers, Martin said, “Well, I guess that’s a no.”

I looked over at him. “Out of all the girls that Lars Finley can have in this school, do you really think that he’s got the hots forme?”

Martin gave me a quick onceover. “C’mon, Edie,” he whispered. “You gotta know that you’re hot.”

I wanted to be immune to his words, but I wasn’t. I’d never had a guy call me hot before, and it felt good to hear in this new world that I was finding myself in. Guys were talking to me, I was making new friends, I was going to parties, and I was even having fun, despite whatever was going on with Lars.

Even though Talon had taught me better, and even though guys hadn’t talked to me because of my brother, it’d been hard not to compare myself to other girls over the years. While I might be passably pretty, I didn’t have big boobs or a sexy booty. I had a petite build, so I didn’t have the kinds of curves that made guys swallow their tongues. Yeah, my eyes were an unusual shade of blue, but that was about the only remarkable thing that I could say about myself. Still, it wasn’t like they were anything rare. Alexandria had these ice-colored blue eyes that captured your attention as soon as she flashed them at you.

So, yeah, hearing Martin say that I was hot felt good. I felt flattered, and that just further proved Lars’ point that I was too inexperienced to notice when a guy was playing me and when he wasn’t. If a guy could turn me stupid by just calling me hot, then what could a slick talking salesman accomplish by saying all the right things to my attention-starved ego?

Determined to show Lars that I was better than that, I said, “Sure, I am.”

Martin’s head reared back a bit. “Are you kidding me right now?” His eyes raked over my body again. “Edie, you’re a fucking smoke show. How do you not know that?”

“Mr. Nordstrom, is there something that you’d like to share with the rest of the class?”

We both jumped guiltily, and I looked over at Martin as he said, “Just telling Edie what an academic inspiration she is, Mrs. Joiner.”

I bit my lip because I had promised not to laugh again.

“Oh, really?” she deadpanned.

“It’s true,” Martin lied. “I mean, she’s got the highest grade point average in school.”

That part was true.

“While I’m very aware, do you think that you can worship her brain another time?” she asked sarcastically. “I’m trying to grade papers here.”

Martin grinned at her. “Of course.”

Mrs. Joiner pointed over at me. “Ms. Draven, let me know if I need to move Mr. Nordstrom.”

My lips twitched. “Of course, Mrs. Joiner.”

Martin threw me a wink, and I could feel myself actually blush. Even though I knew that Martin flirted with all the girls like that, the attention really was scrambling my brain, and maybe I really wasn’t cut out to run with the bulls. Yeah, Talon had been popular, but he had sheltered me so much that I really hadn’t had any experience hanging out with the popular crowd. So, every time that something new happened, it just reminded me that I was still a tourist in this new world.

Ignoring Martin and his flirting, I went back to studying, very aware that Lars was probably fuming at me from in back of the class. No doubt that this morning had probably pissed him off, but I could appreciate how he wasn’t causing a scene in class. As mad as he might be at me, he knew how important school was to me, and I was grateful that he was keeping his anger in check right now.

It wasn’t until the bell rang, signaling lunch, that I realized just how pissed off Lars Finley was and didn’t care about not causing a scene. In fact, I was pretty sure that we were going to be the topic of the entire school for the rest of the day, if not the rest of the freakin’ week.

Have you ever been hauled out of a classroom by the back of your neck?

Yeah, it wasn’t anything that I recommended.
