“That was just me being inexperienced,” she replied, turning my blood hot.

“Yeah, baby, I don’t think so,” I countered. “I think that you knewexactlywhat you were doing when you wrapped yourself around me.”

“Don’t call me that,” she ordered, though there wasn’t any real steel behind her words.

“Why not?” I asked just to be a dick.

“People might get the wrong idea,” she replied. “I don’t want people thinking that there’s something going on between us.”

My left eye started to twitch again as I placed my palms on the counter, caging her in. “Why’s that?”

Her blue eyes glowed with stubbornness. “I’m still interested in dating, Lars. If people think that there’s something going on between us, no guys will ever ask me out.”

“The days of other guys asking you out has sailed, Edie,” I informed her.

Her eyes narrowed defiantly. “ThenI’llaskthemout.”

“Over my dead body.”

She arched a brow. “That can be arranged.”

I eyed the spitfire standing before me, still wondering how I’d gotten this version of her when she’d been sweet as pie for Talon all these years. “I’ll make you a deal.”

“Oh, this ought to be good,” she snorted.

Ignoring her flippancy, I said, “You claim that the way that you reacted to me on Friday was a result of your inexperience, right?” Edie started gnawing on her lower lip. “Well, now that you have some better understanding of what it feels like to be handled in such a manner, let’s test what you felt on Friday.”

“What…” She had to clear her throat, and I’d be lying if it didn’t make me feel smug. “What do you mean?”

“I’m going to kiss you again, Edie,” I warned her as one of my hands went to her hip. “I’m going to kiss you again, and if you feel nothing, then I’ll step aside and let you start dating.” My other hand went to her other hip, and because Edie weighed absolutely nothing, it was easy for me to lift her on the counter. “However, if youdofeel something for me, then no other guys.”

“That’s not fair,” she argued, though her voice sounded husky and not at all upset anymore. “Of course, I’m going to feel something. You’rekissingme, Lars.”

My hands tightened on her hips. “I didn’t say if you felt something,” I corrected. “I said if you felt somethingfor me.”

Those hypnotizing blue eyes of hers flared, telling me that she knew exactly what I was getting at. I wanted to know what Edie felt for me, and if I asked her outright, she’d lie to my face right now. She was trying to prove a point about her newfound independence, and while I understood it after being raised by a brother like Talon Draven, her newfound independence wasn’t working for me.

“I…I don’t think…think this is a good idea,” she stammered.

“Scared?” I taunted.

Edie’s eyes narrowed, and you just had to love a stubborn woman.

Chapter 14

The hunger that burns bright.

Lars~

“Hardly,” she fired back bravely.

“Then let me kiss you,” I shot back. “If you’re not scared of losing, then what’s the problem?”

“Because this is a stupid bet,” she said, reaching for any excuse to get out of it. “This is just another way for you to try to manipulate me.”

“I don’t need to manipulate you, Edie,” I pointed out. “One word from me, and I can make you completely off-limits to everyone in this school.”

“Haven’t you already?” she scoffed.
