“Are you seriously going to act like you haven’t heard the rumors about me and Rosa Venice?” I challenged.

Edie’s eyes flashed with hurt, but only for a second. “Your sex life isn’t any of my business, Lars,” she lied.

“Oh, really?” I bit out. “After yesterday, you’re going to stand there and tell me that me hooking up with another girl is none of your business?”

“If what happened yesterday gave me a right to your personal life, then damn near every girl in this school should have that same right, Lars,” she spat. “While you’ve made it extremely clear how you feel about my naivety, I know better than to believe that a quick finger fuck means anything to you.”

I’d never felt my blood boil like this before.

“Do not talk like that,” I snarled down at her. “I don’t know what makes you think that it’s okay for you to talk like that, but it’s not.”

“I’m eighteen,” she flung back. “It’s perfectly acceptable for me to curse, Lars.”

“It would be if that’s the way that you normally spoke, Edie,” I shot back. “Whatever’s got you talking like your brother didn’t teach you better is wrong.”

Rather than dispute the truth, she asked, “What are you doing? What’s the point of this conversation, Lars?”

I wanted to throttle the girl.

I wanted to wrap my hands around her neck and just shake the shit out of her.

“Those rumors aren’t true,” I finally said, clearing the air. “I didn’t hook up with Rosa Venice last night, nor do we have a date for the game or whatever the fuck people are saying about us.”

“Not my business,” she bit out.

“The fuck it isn’t,” I fired back.

Cocking her head to the side, she said, “It isn’t. Still, even if it were, where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire, Lars. Whatever’s going on between you and Rosa-”

“Nothing is going on between me and Rosa!” I yelled, slapping my palm against the building near the side of her head. “There’s nothing going on between me and any of the girls at this school!” I leaned down closer to her face. “Apart fromyou, that is.”

With her blue eyes on fire, she said, “You can date who you want, Lars.”

“I don’t want to date her,” I growled, frustration building.

“I don’t ca-”

“When I heard the rumor, I confronted her,” I said, choosing to explain the situation versus strangling the girl. “She wanted to get back at her ex, and she thought that using my name would do it.” Edie remained stubbornly silent. “I told her that I didn’t appreciate her spreading lies about where I was last night, and I also made it perfectly clear that we werenotgoing to hook up.”

“You can date whoever you want, Lars,” she repeated, her voice hard, and I had no idea how women had the power to drive men insane like this. “We aren’t dating.”

“We’re not?” I fired back, daring her to deny it.

“What happened yesterday doesn’t automatically make you my boyfriend,” she said, and I could feel my goddamn left eye twitching again.

“Then what does it make me, Edie?” I asked, my entire body tight with anger at every-fucking-thing.

“A mistake,” she snapped, and she might as well have stabbed me in the chest.

Taking a deep breath, I took a step back from her, giving us both some space before I took us somewhere that neither of us could return from. I fisted my hands, doing my best to convince myself that this was just her pride talking. I mean, what girl wouldn’t be upset about hearing those rumors after what we’d done yesterday? Edie was just trying to save face, that’s all.

It’d better fucking be all.

“Do you really believe that?” I asked, because I needed to know. If Edie really saw me as a mistake, then I needed to rethink what I was doing; I needed to rethink my strategy.

Her face softened, and those crystalline eyes of hers looked a bit wounded. “I believe that Rosa Venice is exactly your type, Lars,” she said. “That’s what I believe.”

I shook my head because she couldn’t be more wrong about that.
