“You still should have told me,” he replied, his voice even and giving nothing away.

“Yes, I should have,” I finally agreed. “I just…it just all happened so fast. One minute, Lars is annoying me with his overprotectiveness, and then the next, I’m in his arms, and it felt…it felt like I belonged there.” I could hear my voice cracking a bit. “I also didn’t want any more lectures on how I don’t know what I’m feeling.”

Talon scowled. “Who lectured you on that?”

“Lars,” I admitted. “He thought that I might be confusing love with lust because of my inexperience, and…you know, he accused me of being naïve enough to fall for the first guy to ever kiss me, and all I’d done was gone and proven him right.” I let out a bitter laugh. “I can’t count how many times we’d fought over what was happening between us. If it’s any consolation, Lars tried really hard to resist what was happening.” I wrapped my arms around my waist. “He loves you, Talon. He…it would tear him up if you didn’t approve or forgive us.”

“You should have told me, Edie,” he repeated. “Until the moment that Lars told me what was going on, I thought you had trusted me with everything.”

“I did,” I rushed out. “I still do.” I had to sniffle back my emotions. “I just…it was easier to let Lars call the shots on this one. I wasn’t sure if I was strong enough to hear your opinion on our relationship.”

“Edie, I’m going to tell you the same thing that I told Lars earlier,” he replied. “You could never let me down. There’s nothing that you could ever do or say that would make me love you or respect you less. You are the best version of all of us, and I will always support you.Always.”

“I know,” I sighed, my emotions running amok again. “I just…all of this is so new to me, and I…I guess I just handled it wrong.”

Walking towards me, Talon stopped when he was standing right in front of me. It wasn’t often that my brother looked troubled, but he looked troubled now. He looked hurt, disappointed, and troubled, and I hated how it was my fault that he looked that way.

“Don’t ever lie to me again, Edie,” he ordered. “I don’t care what the reason. That’s not the relationship that we have, okay? Even if I don’t approve of your choices, I’ll still always be there for you. Yeah, it’ll be with a lot of advice ringing in your ear, but I will never let you down, Edie.”

My heart thumped painfully.

“So…so, you…you don’t approve of my relationship with Lars?” I asked, my emotions threatening to choke me.

Talon’s face softened. “That’s not what I said.”

“Well, are you going to tell me what you think about all this?” I finally asked.

His hands came up to rest on my shoulders. “Edie, I just want you to be happy and safe,” he said, and that sounded like disapproval in disguise.

“I know,” I replied as my entire frame sagged with exhaustion.

His hands dropped from my shoulders, his right hand coming up to run down his face. “Christ, this has got to be one of the most uncomfortable conversations that I’ve ever had.”

My lips twitched at that. “Yeah, tell me about it.”

Talon let out another sigh. “Honestly, whatever is…while I really don’t need or want to know the details, as far as you being in a relationship with Lars…” He sighed again. “Edie, as far as I’m concerned, there’s not a better guy out there for you.”

My eyes immediately started pouring.

“Awe, Edie,” he muttered before taking me in his arms.

“I thought you were going to hate him,” I cried into his chest as my arms wrapped around his waist. “I thought that we were ruining everything.”

“I know, I know,” he said soothingly. “Lars told me as much.”

“I…I was so scared that he was going to pick you,” I confessed.

I felt my brother smirk. “Lars was never going to pick me, Edie. He was always going to choose you, and I’d expect no less.”

“So…so, everything’s going to be alright?”

Talon kissed the top of my head. “As long as Lars never hurts you, everything will be fine.”

“What if I hurt him?”

“Don’t, Edie,” he said seriously. “While I have no doubt that you can survive Lars hurting you, I’m not sure if he’d be okay if it’s the other way around.” His arms tightened around me. “So, please, don’t hurt him, Edie. I just spent over an hour talking to the guy, and you are it for him.”

I hugged my brother, feeling like everything really was going to be okay.
