“I don’t know, man, but if I were you, I would keep a close eye on my chick.”

Dax starts to nod off and I get up to stoke the fire again. When I look up a few moments later, both Marissa and Ronnie are gone.

Chapter Sixteen

Girls are easy for guys like us, son. Flash some money and white teeth, and they’ll be in your pants before you even have to say a word.-Robert Lewis to his son Brad

Ronnie

Marissa’s shoes stomp over branches and the campfire becomes a distant glow. I shiver. At least, there’s a full moon tonight, so there’s some light between that and the small flashlight app on my cell phone.

“Are you sure the girls wanted to meet all the way out here?” My teeth are starting to chatter. The wind has picked up with nightfall. An owl hoots and I stumble. I am not an outdoorsy type of girl.

“Yep, just a few more feet and we’ll be by the river. Lindsey said she would start a small fire. We couldn’t wait to get away from the guys for a bit.”

I nod my head absently. Lindsey, the small blonde cheerleader who is literally obsessed with her hair and makeup becoming nature girl and starting a fire? I’m starting to get a gut feeling that something is wrong. I try hard to ignore it.

“You know, we really have wanted to get to know you. We really aren’t a bunch of mean girls. I know some of the other girls think that, but obviously they are a bit jealous. Girls can be the worst, can’t they?” She glances back at me and I nod weakly. Her grin is too wide and I shiver again. There’s something not right about this whole thing.

She crunches through some more underbrush until we come to a small clearing. I can hear water running nearby, but I see no sign of the girls.

Marissa places a hand on her hip. “Well, that’s weird. I know this is where we were supposed to meet.”

She paces back and forth for a minute while I watch her with suspicion. Her gaze shifts to something behind me and I hear footsteps.

Her face transforms into a wicked grin. “About time you got here. Lindsey’s got the good shit back at the house and I’m ready to have fun. I don’t want to deal with your little problem anymore.”

She gestures towards me and I whip around. Brad stands there grinning. “Hey beautiful, what’s up?”

I back away from him and almost fall over Marissa. She grabs the back of my arms forcefully and pushes me towards Brad. I tremble as I realize I’m out here alone with no one to scream for and no one to help. I don’t like the menacing look Brad is giving me. There’s something not right about his eyes. They’re bloodshot and he’s obviously on something far stronger than pot. Dang, I knew something was up. Ronnie girl, remember to always trust your gut.

He grabs me and I can feel his thumbs digging into my upper arms. “Not going anywhere, are you?” I shake my head no. I can’t seem to get any words out past the lump in my throat.

He looks behind me and nods at Marissa. “Go on, Riss, and save some of the good stuff for me.”

Marissa starts to walk away and then stops. She turns around. For a moment, she appears serious and almost sad. “Don’t worry, Ronnie. None of this is a big deal. Besides, it’ll help your rep to be with someone like Brad. It’ll help you fit in.” With those words, she runs off and my heart falls into my stomach as I watch her go.

I’m terrified and I know my face reflects that as I stare up at Brad. “No reason to be scared, pretty girl. We’re just gonna have some fun.” He steps closer to me. He loosens one of the hands holding my arm and grabs my chin. His grip is inescapable and I can feel the panic rising in my throat. For the first time in my life, I know what real fear feels like. This doesn’t feel like some teenage boy just trying to get close to me. It feels like something a lot more sinister.

His breath is hot on my face. “All I want is a little time with you, Ronnie. I don’t know why you keep running from me.”

“I..I’m not running from you Brad. I’m sorry if it feels that way.” My voice is shaking. Maybe he’ll back off if I just act normal and agree with everything he says.

“I just want to get to know you better.” He tightens his grip on my chin and I whimper in pain. “Just give me a kiss. One kiss, that’s all. Remember you kissed me once before.”

I struggle and try to back away, but his other hand holds the back of my head. He forces his lips on me and I try to break away. My mouth opens in a gasp and as soon as it does, he sticks his tongue in. I keep pushing at his chest. Please, please stop. I gather up my courage and bite his tongue.

“You freakin’ fat bitch!” He rears back. He spits blood onto the ground. He slaps me hard across the face before I have time to step back. I try to put my hand up to my cheek. It stings with the force of his slap. He grabs me by the arms again and drags me up close to him. Anger contorts his face. The pretty boy of Riverton Prep doesn’t look pretty at all. Right now, he looks like a monster.

“You think you can throw me to the side like trash, little Miss Goody Two Shoes, but I don’t play that game. You’re the trash here. You think anyone here cares about you? You think anyone will care if I claim what’s mine this weekend? Fuck, girl, I could do anything I want to you and that loser dad of yours still wouldn’t be able to do anything about it.”

My mind is racing. What he’s saying is probably true. My dad’s had a hard time since we got here. No rich parent here will accept that their kid may have screwed up. He’s had to fight to have kids simply suspended for some pretty awful stuff.

I open my mouth and his hand immediately covers it.

“You don’t have to say anything little girl. I’m sick of playing this game. The bet was to fuck you so that’s what I’m gonna do. I’m tired of having to pretend like I give a shit about you to get into your pants.” He takes his hand off of my mouth long enough for me to get two words out.

“W..what bet?” My voice is quivering with fear but I want to keep him talking.
