Page 43 of Falling for You

Butterflies riot in my stomach. I put a hand to my chest when I see Sawyer’s back. After his stunt two days ago, I know the ball is in my court. I’ve been trying to gather up the nerve to go see him since then.

He’s bent over going through a file cabinet. I wipe my sweaty palms on my jeans.

“Sawyer, you have a visitor here.” Frank sticks his hands in his coveralls and his grin is positively wicked as he adds in a sing song voice. “It’s a girl.”

“What the..” Sawyer straightens up quickly and hits his head on the bottom of a cabinet in the process. “Ow, Frank. What the hell?”

He turns around and catches sight of me standing there. It’s kind of fun to watch the blush that steals across his face. “Ronnie, hey what’s up?” He shuffles his feet. It’s obvious he’s uncomfortable.

“I’ll just leave you two to talk. Be good, kids. Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.” He snickers and I can’t help but laugh as Sawyer throws up his middle finger. Obviously, they have a very comfortable working relationship.

“Sorry about that.” Sawyer gazes nervously at me and rocks back on his feet. He has the sleeves of his coveralls rolled up and I catch myself staring at his strong forearms. He clears his throat and I realize I need to say something.

I drum my fingers on the desk closest to me. It’s covered in papers and I realize after I pull my fingers back…grease. “I came by to apologize.” I gaze around at the joke of the day calendar, the scattered pictures on the desk, anywhere but at Sawyer. I fiddle with my necklace and search for the appropriate words.

I glance down at the floor and watch his dirty white sneakers come closer to where I stand. He lifts my chin up with his finger. “Why would you possibly need to apologize? I’m the one who messed up. I should have told you about that stupid bet. I didn’t know he was actually serious about it. If I had known he was going to do something like what he did…” He trails off and his voice is sincere and earnest. I know he wishes he could erase what happened to me.

“I need to apologize because I didn’t really give you a chance to explain. I automatically assumed the worst. You’ve been nothing but kind to me, and I shouldn’t have listened to someone like Marissa in the first place.” I try looking away again, but he tilts my chin so that I’m staring up into his eyes.

“You know you totally ruined me trying another grand gesture, right?” He grins and I find myself staring at his lipas. I’ve missed him, and I’ve missed his kisses.

“Oh my God. I’m still trying to recover from the last grand gesture.” I can’t help the wide grin that crosses my face when I think of him climbing down that tree with torn pants.

“Dax and I had it narrowed down to sky writing an apology, or me announcing what an idiot I am in front of everyone at the next football game.” He lets go of my chin to wrap his arms around me and I lean in close to smell him. He smells like a mixture of Sawyer and the garage. It’s a good smell on him.

I wrap my arms around his neck. “I liked what you came up with first. The other options are way too public. But in any case, you don’t have to do anything. I think we were both a little in the wrong.”

He leans down and kisses my cheek and my forehead.

“Nope, that’s not good enough. I’m missing something right here.” I pout and point to my lips. I see the heat in his eyes flare.

“I was getting there, Red. I would never forget my favorite part.” He captures my lips with his and I open to him. His tongue slides over mine and I moan. His hands roam down my back until he’s grabbing my backside. I wrap one leg around him as I feel his erection harden against me.

He pulls back a bit and nips at my lip. “God, you taste good. I’ve missed it.”

I stroke his back. “It’s been less than a week.” I can’t help but giggle as he pulls be back harder against him.

“Way too long,” he growls.

Then he pushes back from me for a second. I can’t help but groan.

“You know, you’re entirely too good for me, right? A couple of years ago, I may have been one of the guys to start a bet like that. I was Brad a few years ago.” His eyes are full of remorse and regret.

“I didn’t know you then, so I can’t say what you would have done. But I do know the answer to this. Have you ever tried to force yourself on a girl before?”

“Fuck no. Of course not. I would never do that Ronnie.” His face is shattered that I would think he could do something like that.

I place my hand on his forearm. “I know you wouldn’t, and that’s why you’re not at all like Brad. Don’t ever compare yourself to him.”

He pulls me close again and kisses my hair. “I will always protect you, Ronnie. I will always try to make you happy.” I close my eyes happily and let him hold me.

We break apart when the office door opens. Frank enters with his head down and his hand over his eyes. “Sorry kids, I wouldn’t interrupt but I have to find this guy’s bill before he loses his mind.”

Sawyer chuckles. “It’s okay, Frank. You can look up. We’re finished making up, I think.” He glances over at me and I nod. He takes my hand.

“I’ll walk you out, Red.”

Frank winks at me as I pass by his desk. “Don’t be too easy on him. He needs to be put in his place occasionally.”
