“Um, actually I got here a week ago and your roommate dropped out at the last minute. So, I asked if I could room with you. I hope that’s okay.” She twists her hands together and the blush on her cheeks belies her nervousness.

I hug her tightly. “Yay, that makes me so happy. We’ll have a great time! Isn’t this great, Dax?”

I turn around expecting the sweet, adoring expression on Dax’s face that he always wears around Lily. Instead I’m greeted by a blank stare. His lips curve up in a semblance of a smile. “Yeah, it’s great.”

Lily steps closer to Dax and their eyes are completely glued to each other. Whew, did it get tense in here or what? My dad clears his throat. Dax jumps like he’s waking up from a trance.

“Can I see you outside, Dax?” Lily asks so quietly I almost don’t hear her, but it’s evident Dax does as he follows her out the door.

Sawyer announces what we’re all thinking once they’ve left the room. “Well, that was awkward.” He looks around at all of the boxes. “Now, let’s get you unpacked.”

Later, after Dad has left and most of my things are put up, Sawyer and I lay cuddled up on my new bedspread. “This year is going to be so amazing, Sawyer. I’m so happy you’re here.”

He kisses the top of my head and continues playing with my hair. “Red, I wouldn’t be anywhere else. I love you.”

“I love you too.” I kiss him long and deep and then sit up. I nibble at my lower lip with my teeth.

“Uh oh, Red I know that look. Something’s bothering you. Spit it out.”

“It’s just, did you see how Dax and Lily were with each other? They’re such good people. I hate to see them upset with each other.”

He starts laughing. “Honey, what we saw today was not anger. It was some truly epic sexual tension.”

“You think so?” Lily is so shy, and Dax is so very Dax. Talkative and hyper and the sweetest person. I tilt my head and think. I can actually see them together. They would make a cute couple.

“I can see the wheels rolling in there and I think you should stop. They’ll figure it out just like we did. No need to rush them.”

“It wouldn’t hurt to just give them a little push…” I trail off when I see the frown on Sawyer’s face.

“Just let it happen, Red.”

I lean down to kiss him again and say, “Okay, I gotcha. No pushing. I won’t interfere at all.” I feel a little guilty but I cross my fingers behind my back. What he doesn’t know won’t hurt him. Everyone deserves their own love story.
